Yesterday Tracey saw her squirrel leave the box so she ran out and got the ladder to look into the nest. Except Mom squirrel was back in the box by the time Tracey lifted the lid and they both nearly scared each other to death.
I expected to see Tracey come crashing down off the ladder with a mad rodent attached to her face. Fortunately Mom squirrel just ran away and Tracey took some pictures of the babies in the bottom of the box.
Strangely enough this squirrel box was a bird box for Flickers. Traceys Dad made it for her and she filled it with wood shavings from my saw and the Flickers built a nest in it the first summer we had it.
Last year she had troubles with starlings moving in so she attached a small bit of board with a smaller hole to keep the starlings out and hoped maybe some bluebirds would move in. No such luck.
Then last fall she noticed the squirrels were visiting the box but couldnt get in so she moved the piece of wood to make the hole larger again. So the squirrel moved in and kept the starlings out.
After a while Tracey decided there must be baby squirrels in the box and she has been dying to get a chance to look in the box. Her curiosity almost got her in trouble with a mad Mom squirrel but it all worked out and we now have baby squirrel pictures.
Stay tuned for the continuing sagas of Tracey and the wild animals.
