Noah has the weirdest luck with cars. I took his Honda in to get it looked at yesterday. He drove our Ford Taurus to work. The service department looked his car over for at least an hour and couldn’t find anything wrong with it except it will need new tires real soon. I drove it around their lot a bit and sure enough — no more noise. The only thing we could figure is maybe some sand or road salt had gotten into the brakes and was grinding between rotor and pad and then had washed out. I had gone specifically late in the day so Noah could pick me up from the dealership should it turn out we would have to leave it for repairs. So I called him on the cell phone to tell him his good news (they didn’t even charge us for the hour spent looking) and he was happy to hear that. Then he said it was his turn to tell me about what happened to the Ford. He was run off the road by a big truck and smashed into the guard rail on the way to work in the snow storm. After making sure he was all right I quizzed him about the car and it didn’t sound good. He said it was still driving OK so I let him drive it home. I took it out for a drive when he got home and immediately realized something was not right at all. In fact I wouldn’t have let him drive it home from Peoria on the interstate had I known how bad it is. I think he broke something major in the front suspension because the tires won’t track properly ... it keeps jerking one way and then another. There is a large crease in the front quarter-panel and one of the side reflectors is obliterated. Still, all in all I would rather fix the car and have Noah all in one piece. And it turned out better to crunch the old Ford instead of his new Honda ... but it is so weird the way it all worked out. I drove it to the repair shop in Morton last evening and I am debating about whether to make Noah pay for all of it or just half.
