Dear Class of 2010

Aaron & Ben are in the Tremont Class of 2010 so those snotty demands above were made directly to them. Except they seem unable to spell Ben's last name correctly. Typical.

It seems the Class of 2010 isn't interested in the School Prom Shake-Down and haven't been selling their magazines to foot the bill. Ben says he thinks fewer than 1 in 10 of his class has paid up. I've told the boys to ignore these demands and if they are threatened any more with it to have the school contact me instead of bullying the students.

I don't think either of our kids is even interested in the Prom and if they were I don't see why they need to do it in Peoria when we just paid several hundred dollars extra in real estate taxes (due every year from last year until forever) to reinvent the school (or maybe they said it was "renovate" - whatever). I really hope they don't get too stupid about this and threaten the boys grades or something because this is just plain robbery as far as I am concerned.

I can't imagine why generations of students were able to attend free high school proms and now all of a sudden they need several thousand dollars to do it. I also wonder how many kids will end up spending their own allowances to pay this extortion for fear of telling their parents. Just another one of the many reasons why this school district SUCKS!

Just an added note —— I called the Superintendent’s office about this and the fellow didn’t know from bupkis about any of this. I guess we pay him way too much to know what is going on? I tried the Principal’s office and no answer so I will try again later today. At this point I just want the other shoe to drop —— what is the repercussion of NOT paying the extortion?

Well, since they didn’t spell Ben’s name right, he is exempt . That’s definitely ridiculous--I didn’t sell any of the magazines either, but then again, when I did it we were selling the magazines to pay for the class above us, and the class below us sold magazines to pay for our stuff. I’m still not sure why prom has to be at some convention center or stadium instead of their precious cafetorium. That would drop the cost to probably $2 per student to pay for the DJ--which is a job that could probably be done by students, anyway.

I called and talked to Principal Jeff —— he said that they didn’t have to pay if they weren’t going to either the Prom or the Class Trip next year. Ben is concerned that if he pays the $60 and nobody else does they still won’t have the Prom or the Trip and he is just out the money so he would rather wait to see if they are even going to have these events —— and to see if he would want to go if they do. That’s smart! He’s thinking ahead before investing his money!
