11/07/2012 Boisterous Election DiscussionsI have purposely waited until after Election Day to post this rant, just because my experience yesterday morning (election day) was so surreal.I stopped at Bob Evan’s in Pekin for breakfast and was seated near a table with several couples. They were behind me so I could hear what was going on but couldn’t see them. It was almost surreal as a political discussion unfolded. The talk was generally about voting and that they had just voted and were having breakfast. Much as I was, they were in town. Then a female voice asks, “So, who did you vote for?”, and a man answers with the single word “Obama”. And then it started. This same female sallies forth with the most uneducated and false GQP talking points available — reciting much of the same tired nonsense about how “Nobama” had forced Jeep to send all their jobs to China (an outright lie) and various other lies, half truths and pure Fox News Nonsense. In short order other Repuglicans at this table joined in to berate the “liberals” who so far as I could tell were suffering this insanity in silence. I know the feeling. I have done the same thing because it is not worth making a scene to be just as rude, crude, and mouthy in any attempt to try to stem the flow of righteous ignorance. It reminded me so much of the Archie Bunker character in the All in the Family television show only with several Archies instead of just the one. A bombastic spew of erroneous, uneducated and racist diatribe. I didn’t turn to look but in my mind’s eye I could see the arm waving, head shaking and eye rolling one usually sees displayed with this kind or outrageous ignorance. So as I type this, I don’t know if Romney is going to get elected, but if the loony toons eating breakfast this morning managed to get Mitt voted into office it is a very, very sad commentary on the state of society in our country. I appreciate that people have differences of opinion, and I want people to vote the way they see fit. That is the basis for democracy. But it does hurt my heart to realize there are so many people who blindly take such wild accusations as truth and vote on blind party faith. Or worse, are willing to believe such vile things to bolster their prejudice. I would much prefer they just say they aren’t going to vote for a black guy as continue all the racist comments about a black Muslim from Kenya without a birth certificate who is only concerned about black people on welfare.
