This cartoon reminded me of my first physics lessons in grade school.

Since I was always the biggest kid on the playground the teeter totter always left me sitting on the ground with the other kid way up in the air.

One day a teacher showed me how to adjust the plank. Underneath there were five brackets and by moving my end closer to the fulcrum bar it made it possible to work for me too. She also showed me that by scooting forward I could do the same thing.

It seems to me schools today could teach some basic lessons the same way. Much more effective than imaginary number lines.
