In 1927, Louis B. Mayer, the head of MGM, announced the creation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at a formal banquet at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.
He wanted to create an organization that would mediate labor disputes without unions and improve the film industry’s image. Avid self promotion led to the “Academy Awards” two years later. |
