In 1944, during World War Two, Allied forces launched the first of four battles for Monte Cassino in Italy; the Allies were ultimately successful. #WW2 The capture of Monte Cassino resulted in 55,000 Allied casualties, with German losses estimated at around 20,000 killed and wounded. The battle has been described as a Pyrrhic victory. Once again American troops had to save the day for incompetent British Lord generals. |
