Cubas tourism sector has fallen to historic lows at a time when the island most needs foreign currency, intensifying pressure on an economy already in severe distress. International tourist arrivals dropped to 1.8 million in 2025, down 17.8% from 2024, according to official figures from Cubas National Office of Statistics and Information. The result fell well short of the governments target of 2.6 million visitors. The figure marks one of the lowest levels in more than two decades, excluding the pandemic years, and remains far below the peaks recorded in 2018, when arrivals reached 4.6 million, and in 2019, with 4.2 million. The collapse has had a direct impact on an economy that depends heavily on tourism as its main source of hard currency. Tracey and her sister Sandy visited Cuba in June, 2024. |
