This weekend a living history event at Scarborough Castle invites people to discover history from both World Wars. At the start of the Great War in 1914, the Imperial German High Seas Fleet launched a surprise attack on England’s northeast coast. Over 1,000 high explosive shells were fired during the raid. British public opinion was outraged and the cry of “Remember Scarborough” was central to the military recruiting campaign that followed.
