A herd of elephants from the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage are pictured at a river in the village of Pinnawela, some ninety kilometers north-east of Colombo. The Sri Lankan elephant is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as the population has declined by at least 50% over the last three generations, with the species threatened by habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation.
