We discovered another pitfall of electronic books. Tracey has been reading a series and when she got to book six —— it wasn’t on #Amazon to buy for her #Kindle.

Fortunately we found it elsewhere in another format and I was able to hack it to put it on her Kindle. We got lucky. I would imagine there are many people who would find it very disappointing that they couldn’t get every book in a series in the same format. Damn Digital Rights Management!

Yesterday was one of those days! Tracey’s replacement #Kindle arrived but there were no instructions with it or a shipping label to return the busted one. So several minutes on hold and transferred to several departments at #Amazon.com to get them to email me what I needed. Wrong label —— I was supposed to get a pre-paid label from UPS and got one from the Post Office they were going to charge me for. More bad music on hold and several transfers and we get the right label emailed.

I made sure everything was good on the new Kindle and took all the books off the old Kindle. I spent a while boxing up the old one, printing the label, etc. I went into Tremont and paid the second installment on our Real Estate Tax (now there’s a ripoff!) then went to Pekin and dropped the dead Kindle off at the UPS to get shipped back. Went to Bob’s for lunch and they have “discontinued” the Taco Salad. Said it is “seasonal”. Good Grief.

Last, but not least, the Internets died at about 2:00 yesterday afternoon and they didn’t get it working again until almost 10 p.m. That was a major Bummer for A&B. They wandered about the house like lost souls.

Hopefully today will go better.
It was six years ago today that I retired.
Sure doesn’t seem that long!

I just returned home from dropping Tracey off at work. I also stopped at the UPS drop-off location in Pekin to return a space heater I had ordered last week from #Amazon.com for the sun room. It was advertised as a 220v 20 amp unit but I got one that was wired for 30 amps. Different plug than the outlet we planned to use (the one for the wall a/c unit we just installed). I decided rather than rewire the plug and change the fuse, etc. I would simply return it and get another brand. I think this time I will go to the local stores so I can see what I am getting.

Just a couple examples of the enormous influence corporations are having on our society and government —— The CEO of #ChickFilA makes news by wielding his corporation against marriage equality. The CEO of #Amazon responds by throwing $2.5 million to an organization to support marriage equality. These issues are blasted on the news front as if they were the most pressing issues of the day. Not to belittle those who are fervent about who’s sleeping with whom, but our country has other major issues being vastly more influenced by corporate dictates including the entire process of electing our government. Sadly our people will have to live with the decisions our so-called “representatives” make based upon their corporate affiliations or conversely —— the businesses they will allow to flourish. This is getting too messed up.

And this only scratches the surface. Imagine the desperation of the #Amazon warehouse workers making half the wages and working in dangerously hot facilities being driven to work 80 hour weeks with no OT pay and no chance for advancement. America has become such a scary place of indifference, apathy and wage slavery.

I did just think of something else; Tracey signed up for the trial of #Amazon Prime. Free shipping, video streaming, music and some other perks.

We spent about an hour looking at the streaming video options while Aaron was here. Not very impressive. As Aaron put it, “It looks like all the leftovers and rejects from Netflix.” Very few movies that weren’t either 50 years old or total B and C movies. Disappointing.

I’m not sure we order enough stuff from Amazon to make the $99 yearly fee worthwhile. I always feel a bit guilty ordering from them knowing they are about the same or worse on their workers as Wal-mart. Labor friendly options in America are disappearing.

Happened to think of the instigating factor on the #Amazon Prime thing.

Tracey blew out the zipper on her lunch bag. So she went on a shopping spree over the weekend to get a new one. No such luck. Nobody has any because those are “school supplies” and won’t be on the shelves again until late summer when school supplies go on sale. Because, of course, nobody packs a lunch anywhere except to grade school?

She decided to buy one online but in most cases the shipping cost was almost as much as the lunch bag. And that is the rest of the story.

Added some more vacation pictures.

The outdoor thermometer arrived Friday. It didn’t stay stuck on the window the first time Tracey put it up and the temperature was off by about 10 degrees. So we brought it in the house to make sure it would read right if it wasn’t in the direct sun. Did fine. Put it back up in the shade on our patio door and by mid-morning yesterday it was reading at least 10 degrees too high.

I went to the #Amazon web site and checked the box that said I wanted to return it for a refund. We get the refund but they don’t even want it back. So maybe they know it is a piece of junk? Or more likely it would cost more to return it than it is worth.

Tracey received a new #Amazon.com Visa card.
The problem is she didn’t apply for it.

We discovered when we called the credit card people that they knew it was fraudulent and explained they had a lot of trouble with this Amazon.com promotion. People were using the identity of other people to get a free gift card by applying. Evidently they send out the credit cards before they do the credit history investigation. Not so smart.

So we went online and checked our credit history and discovered another account had been opened in Tracey’s name for a Walmart MasterCard by someone in Bridgeport, CT. It had been opened just a few days ago and had almost $400 charged to it. Tracey was told the card would be cancelled, the fraud investigated and we would owe nothing. We also had our names flagged for any future credit applications. It is always something.

Tracey had ordered a folding clothes rack to put in the shower so she could hang sweaters, etc. to dry. It arrived yesterday in a huge box. The rack folds up to about 2 feet square and a few inches wide. The box is about 2 X 2 X 4 feet. Way too big. We figure a disgruntled #Amazon employee wanted to cost them more in shipping than we paid for the rack itself.

A week ago Thursday I ordered a new electric shaver and got snookered into buying a case and stand with it. (Only the “bundle” was available on the web site) I only wanted the shaver. The other crap I didn’t want arrived on Saturday —— the shaver is evidently lost in shipping. Now I wait to see if it ever shows up, they will ship another or if I have to cancel and return stuff and start over. It is ALWAYS something.

I called #Amazon about the missing shaver and after numerous stupid automated questions spoke with somebody. I hate these calls. My hearing isn’t good, the connections are usually bad and, as usual, the guy spoke very broken English. He kept saying it would arrive today. I explained the web site has said this since last Thursday after it was supposed to arrive by Tues. He has no idea where it might be, but assured me it would arrive. It didn’t. I was sure it wouldn’t. I’ll try again Monday.

Last week I received an email from #USPS “Informed Delivery” that we had a package arriving from #Amazon on Friday.

On Friday (12/15) we received an email from USPS that it had been delivered at 10:05 a.m. Nothing was delivered. I checked our porch camera video and the postman walked right past our mailbox without delivering anything. We decided to wait. Sometimes they are late.

Still nothing Saturday or the following Monday, so on Tuesday I called the USPS and got an automated system that assured my package HAD been delivered. I asked the machine to connect me with a human and was told somebody would call me back. I then called the local number for the Morton Post Office and I was told they would look into it and I should call Amazon to see what they could do. Later that day I got a call from a nice lady from the original national call and she took notes of everything I said and she was especially interested that I had video of the postman walking right by the house.

Wednesday I called Amazon and a lady with a very foreign accent finally admitted she knew who had sent us the package and even what they had sent but that their security policy forbade her to tell me. I asked if she could forward me to somebody who could be more helpful and she said she would. The call was put on hold and after ten minutes I disconnected the call thinking she had just ditched me.

About an hour later Tracey got a text message from a co-worker who said Amazon had told her I had called them and said we never received the gift. Shortly after that the Morton Postmaster called to say they had found the package had been “misdelivered” and was now in our mailbox. And within minutes Tracey got a call back from the coworker saying her Amazon page had updated to say we just received the package.

I am amazed it all worked out and that there is obviously a very direct connection between Amazon and the postal system. I am quick to complain, and although I am not thrilled I had to deal with the automated systems —— I have to give them credit.

One of Amazon’s (AMZN.O), top executives defended the new, controversial 5-day-per-week in-office policy on Thursday, saying those who do not support it can leave for another company. Amazon said it will not display the cost of tariffs on its products after the White House responded to a report about the potential practice by calling it a “hostile and political” act. On Tuesday, PunchBowl news reported that Amazon would “soon” show just how much Twitler’s tariff plan would add to the price on most of its products, displaying how much of an item’s cost was derived from Twitler’s tariffs next to the product’s listed total price. The White House forcefully pushed back later in the morning. “This is a hostile and political act by Amazon,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Tuesday.
