We finally made some progress at #CEFCU with Ben’s student loan —— I hope. We went to the office in Pekin to get Ben’s account opened as we couldn’t get it done online. And delivered the copies of our identification for them to fax to their Student Loan Department.

Although we have no word on Ben’s student loan status he did get a letter confirming he finally has an account at #CEFCU. It is amazing to me the amount of red tape involved in the most simple of transactions.

Ben has been having fits with #SIUE and #CEFCU. He can’t get the university to confirm to the credit union that he is “enrolled” there and the credit union won’t finalize his student loan until they do.

He has been playing phone tag between both places for two days now and can’t them to agree that the difference between being “admitted” and “enrolled” is ridiculous.

He has his classes scheduled, room reserved, etc. but SIUE refuses to confirm until after the “drop out” date in August —— but they want their money now.

CEFCU won’t give up the money until they get confirmation Ben is actually “enrolled”. What a mess.

We also made a trip to the Pekin #CEFCU yesterday to take care of a refund check Aaron had received from Ashford. I told the teller girl I wanted so much put into savings and the rest to be paid on Aaron’s student loan. She seemed awfully perplexed about the whole thing and asked me if I was on the account.

I explained to her that the check was to Aaron, the accounts were Aaron’s and since I didn’t want any cash back I was just delivering it to be deposited and it shouldn’t be a problem. We finally managed to finish the transaction without any shouting or bloodshed.

I started yesterday morning at #CEFCU in Pekin where I spoke with Aprile about getting a car loan. I was happily surprised that the whole process went well without confusion or consternation. We have a loan pre-approved for at least the amount we are looking at spending. Nice young lady who knows her business and was very polite and helpful. If this keeps up it will ruin my Curmudgeon status!

The rest of the day didn’t go as well though. Both of the salesmen we have been concentrating our #FordEscape buying efforts with had the day off yesterday. There was an $1,100 gap between them for the same vehicle which finally dwindled to almost the same —— BUT —— the car we have been haggling over appears to have already been sold.

So now the search begins this morning to see if they can find a replacement for close to the same price. I expect another day of phone tag and email but I am hoping we can wrap this up today.

#FordEscape
Another day on the phone. We finally have a deal with Uftring Ford and if all goes as planned we will be picking up our new car tomorrow. I still have to get the loan closed with #CEFCU and get the title to the Blazer out of our safe deposit box. And also arrange the car insurance.

Went to First Tremont Bank and got the #Blazer title out of the safe deposit box. Glad it was there because I wasn’t really too sure since I haven’t seen the darn thing in years. I spent about a half-hour cleaning stuff out of the poor old Blazer. I was surprised at the amount of stuff I found in the glove box, door pockets, etc. I even found Louie’s long lost dog leash in a pocket behind the driver’s seat. I want Tracey to take a look to make sure I didn’t miss anything but I think I got all our junk out of there.

Still more phone tag yesterday between me, #CEFCU and #Uftring. Even something as simple as closing a car loan can get complicated beyond comprehension. Tracey and I finally got the papers signed around 1:30 p.m. and then a quick lunch at Culver’s before I had to get her back to work.

The plans for today include taking Mom to #Proctor for tests and then picking up our new car in the early afternoon. I sure hope it all comes off without a hitch!

I just spent some time signing up for online access to our #CEFCU car loan account. I certainly hope they are better at managing the account than they are at online signup because I got caught in a loop of question and answers.

I finally had to shut my browser down and try again. I suspect they have a cookie scheme that is not quite right —— or I have partially blocked something with my security. I finally got it squared away (I hope) but it shouldn’t have been that difficult.

Yesterday was very busy. We started the day at #CEFCU in Pekin to refinance the loan for Tracey’s car and open a checking account. We’ve had a savings account there with a low balance since we had to have one for A&B’s student loans.

We now have two car loans there and since the savings account gets better interest than we have at our original bank I thought we would move our savings to CEFCU —— and then figured it would be nice to have a checking account for when we decide to spend some of that very small fortune.

Speaking of new cars —— #CEFCU just posted our new car loan on their web page and I am almost stunned to discover I can find no errors.

I tried to access my #CEFCU accounts and got the message that “The Connection is NOT Secure”. Never a good thing to see for your banking site? They have a red banner across the top of the opening page sending you to their Facebook page. I guess they think everybody does their banking on Facebook too? Strange.

The Facebook page said nothing besides them knowing they have a problem and are working on it. Apparently this started yesterday afternoon and is still not resolved. Ain’t technology great!

I was checking out my finance stuff yesterday and noticed my regular car payment was off by one day’s interest. After some calculations it seems #CEFCU received the payment on the first but has charged interest for an extra day.

I sent an email asking them what was up with that, including my account number, and I got an email back lecturing me about sending account information via email. I have to ask the question again via a “secure message” on their website in order to get an answer.

It must be too much trouble for them to simply answer the question via “secure message”? And what are they worried about? That somebody will get my car loan account number and make a payment for me?

We have a small SNAFU with #CEFCU. We use their Internet banking and had made a payment to one of Tracey’s co-workers for a group gift. It was only for $10 so not a huge deal but the check was either never received or not cashed. It is even possible she thought it was junk mail and just threw it away without opening it. I’m sure our name or return address were not on the envelope.

The credit union withdrew the money from our account already so I called to see if I cancelled that check would I get our money back and would there be a fee.

I followed the voice tree prompts that specifically informed me I was choosing Internet banking yet the first two girls who answered had no clue and had to re-route my call. Eventually I got the check cancelled and was told there would be no charge.

I asked the girl why they took my money before the check was cashed and she explained it was the only way their “third party” Internet checking system would work. Sounds to me like I should ditch the credit union’s Internet banking and find a different “third party” to handle our money.

#CEFCU phone app locked me out of my account again and I had to call to get it working. Phone tree disconnected me twice because I wouldn’t pick something off the stupid automated response grift.

I was going through our various finance accounts as usual and for some reason this announcement caught my eye on the #CEFCU page. It is proof positive of how centralized our country has become and seems almost ludicrous to me that if the government takes a holiday —— all commerce takes a day off too. Let us hope the computers don’t go on strike.

We had a certificate of deposit at #CEFCU that matured yesterday and the new rate is really good. I decided to call to renew it and add some more from our savings. I was just sure it would take several calls to get this done (as it did last time) but it went so smooth I was astonished. Took less than five minutes and one phone call. I suspect because we already had one set up?

How’s this for some Happy Horseshit?
I just received an email from #CEFCU

Starting November 15, 2024, CEFCU® will discard deposits if the proper endorsement is not used. Regulation requires the following list of endorsement information to be placed on the back of the check.

To properly submit a Mobile Check Deposit:

• Sign the back of the check.
• Write “For Remote Deposit Only” under your signature.
• Then write “CEFCU”.
• And lastly, write your CEFCU Account number.

It’s bad enough all the “factor authentications” we have to endure to begin with and now this nonsense. “Regulation requires” my ass.

I’ve been having trouble lately logging on to the #CEFCU site and after some trouble shooting discovered my #Password manager, CEFCU, and Firefox are no long cooperating. What a pain in the butt! I do wish somebody would set some standards for security because this wild west shoot from the hip security theater is truly not working for me. I suspect it is CEFCU because all my other financial sites work just fine. I’m going to have to decide what I want to do about this because nobody else will change anything.

#CEFCU aggravation:
I was forced to change my password this morning. This alarms me somewhat as I wonder why? Was there a breach? Is it some kind of phishing scam? Why are they forcing me to do this? What’s worse is that my password manager didn’t properly update the change and it took several tries to get it right. And worst of all; at 5 a.m. shortly after this nonsense, Tracey came stumbling out with cell phone in hand. The app awakened her with warnings of “multiple attempts to logon with improper password”. Waking her up with this false alarm (that they created) really was the last straw.
