It is raining as I type and the forecast says rain all day so it should be a good day for a nap.

Tracey is convinced that when I endure the sleep study tonight and eventually get the #CPAP machine I will be so well rested that I won’t need to take naps anymore.

That’s depressing in a way. I suppose I could still take one now and then even though I might not really NEED to? Who would know?

#CPAP
I got a call from the medical supply folks around 9 a.m. yesterday and went to see them at 10:00 to get my breathing machine. Tracey worked late so she helped me put the thing together and hook it up just before she left for work at noon.

I was looking forward to a nice afternoon nap but that didn’t work out. The machine has a humidifier to moisten the air and the darn reservoir leaked and made a huge mess. No nap. I took a scooter ride later and got the durned thing replaced.

So last night was my first full night of sleep with this machine and I really did sleep. I slept so good I feel like I was run over by a train! I am going to have to make some changes in the way I sleep because I hardly moved my position and got all stiff from laying in one spot for so long. I feel good otherwise; we shall see if I start falling asleep later today.

I think I have finally figured out the best set up for keeping that corn starch #CPAP mask on my face and tight enough to keep the air from leaking and whistling around my nose and chin. Evidently the person who designed the stupid thing never tried it out with the pressures they are using for me because the upper straps do a great job of holding the mask to my forehead and not so too good about holding it over my face. I don’t breathe through my forehead. The lower straps pull it tight against my chin. I don’t breathe through my chin. So the middle of the mask arches up and air escapes. The solution was a bit different. I was given sold this chin strap to hold my mouth shut when I had the mask that fit over my nose alone. It has a hole in it that is supposed to fit over my chin. I put this strap over the front of the mask with the air hose going through the chin hole and then pulled it tight with the Velcro straps behind my head. This pulls the mask against my nose and mouth, you know, the parts of my face where I actually breathe —— instead of my forehead and chin.

I decided to try another #CPAP air mask yesterday and went to visit my little girl “respiratory therapist”. We tried out a few masks again and I picked one that didn’t go so far up my face so it wouldn’t rub my nose so bad. I couldn’t resist telling her my numbers were looking good and she immediately asked if I had downloaded the information to the chip and had the doctor’s office “interpret” them for me. I told her that I knew how to use the Clinical Menu and read it for myself. I thought she was going to have kittens on the spot! She kept saying, “Oh, you are NOT supposed to do that!”

I wore the new mask last night and it was much more comfortable and my numbers still look good except for the amount of air leaking. This masks fits farther down my face and I think my beard allows it to leak. I will work on stopping the leak because it causes more air flow and dries my mouth and throat out, but already I like this mask much more than the others.

I think I’m getting another cold. I woke up this morning with my nose all drippy and stuffed up. I discovered a rather disconcerting but obvious fact during the middle of the night —— it is very uncomfortable to sneeze into a #CPAP mask! What a way to wake up! I thought somebody had hit me in the head until I realized what had really happened. Just another new experience to add to my list.

I got a reminder card from the medical supply rip-off place. They say my prescription for the #CPAP machine has expired and I am supposed to get another for them to put “on record”. I have no intention of doing so unless I have to and I will never return to that goofy Taylor at Pekin Hospital. So I wonder if the #MedicalMafia will dispatch someone to confiscate my breathing machine if I don’t pay the yearly ransom for a new prescription? Sometimes I’m not so proud to live in America when it comes to health care.

Yesterday I finally made a couple of phone calls I have been putting off for a while. First, I need a new mask for my #CPAP machine. I have had the same one for over two years now and the straps are about shot —— so it doesn’t fit as well as it should anymore.

I called to make an appointment at the same pulmonologist my Mom goes to. The lady I talked to didn’t know if he would see me or not. She told me I would have to get a copy of my sleep study from Pekin Hospital. It sounds like I have more studies, tests, etc. to look forward to just to get a new mask. Medical Mafia at work.

I rode my motorcycle to Pekin yesterday to get the copy of my sleep study from Pekin Hospital. I managed to get lost right after I stepped off the elevator. That place is laid out like the roads in Pekin and no signs to point the way.

All this trouble for a one page report that is basically meaningless because it was written by Larry the Cable Guy pretending to be a medical technician. Oh Well. Jump through the hoops.

I finally have an appointment to see a pulmonologist later this month. I just hope my #CPAP mask holds together long enough.

I really wish the Medical Mafia would allow simple equipment like this be sold over the counter. It makes no sense to me that I should need a prescription to get a CPAP or any of the attachments. Blatant greed on their part.

My day will be busy. First I take Tracey to work, then I have a morning appointment to see a pulmonologist about getting a new mask for my #CPAP machine. I hope that goes without a lot of nonsense. Then later in the afternoon I take Mom to see her doctor.

Everything seemed to go OK for me yesterday which is a little frightening. Although I had a dozen or so pages of information to fill out for the pulmonologist —— I got the prescription without much more than the cursory examination and small talk. Still a total waste of time and money but it could have been worse I guess.

I got a good night’s sleep with the new breathing machine and mask so I guess the saga has ended.

I spent a while with the technician when I went to pick it up yesterday. He was very helpful and VERY talkative. The new machine is about half the size of my old one and has more features.

I got a mask that is a little different than my old one and I think I cinched it up a little too tight because I have some red lines on my face this morning. I will have to loosen the straps a bit.

I thought I should have gotten this all done sooner but Tracey says she is surprised it got done this soon. She was afraid they would make me do another “sleep study” and that would have taken a few weeks to get scheduled. So I should count my blessings.

I still think it is unfortunate that it should take almost a week to replace the darn thing considering how important it is to people like me who could fall asleep while driving if we don’t get our sleep. But she is right —— it could have been worse .

I tried to take a nap yesterday but I had a blowout on my #CPAP mask. The silicone rubber insert that seals against my face decided to tear and the resulting rush of air across by face and the whistle of escaping air was a rude awakening. I have a spare but resuming the nap didn’t work after all that excitement. Now I have to remember to buy a replacement (at an exorbitant price).

I sent an email to the respiratory outlet that provides my #CPAP supplies. I reminded them, again, of our address change. Hopefully they will get it right this time and not send it to Tremont like they did last time.

Been there, done that. The most ridiculous of the many Medical
Mafia contrived “tests” to provide you the most mundane remedy.
#CPAP machines ought not need a prescription and should be on
the shelf for everybody to buy if they want one.

About a year ago I bought a battery pack to use with my #CPAP in case of a power outage and I haven’t maintained it as I should. I charged it up again night before last and last night I used it to power the CPAP. I’m going to use it again tonight to run the battery down some more and then recharge it again. I need to do this every couple months otherwise it won’t have any juice if I ever need it for real.

The bill for my recent sleep study —— $6,950
#Medicare (and the #MedicalMafia) forced me to endure another night of torture to prove I can’t sleep without a #CPAP breathing machine. They could have bought seven or eight machines for the cost of this useless study. The worst of it was the study was so screwed up it took me another week to get things made right again.

I couldn’t get to sleep laying flat on my back without the CPAP. They MUST have a baseline test (never mind my BASELINE for the past 11 years has been with a CPAP). The tech raised the head of the bed so I could sleep. (How that is baseline I don’t know) Then they woke me up and put the BiPap on to prove it worked. Except she left the bed inclined so the test wasn’t right because I don’t sleep with an inclined bed.

All that fuss and bother to end up right back where I started.
Except I had to pay almost $200 for my part of the cluster flop.

There is a silicon insert on my #CPAP mask and I need to replace it every month as it gets stiff and doesn’t seal properly.

I called and ordered one on 11/17. Never showed up.
Called again on 11/22 and I was told there would be one in the mail and I should have it by Thanksgiving. Never happened.

I called again yesterday and received profuse apologies and another promise that it will be in the mail. We shall see?

Apples and oranges, but I had my own #CPAP machine when I was in hospital and they acted as if I was crazy. I knew it was set properly and refused to use the one the “technician” kept trying to make me use.

I ordered a new mask for my #CPAP last Thursday. It is supposed to arrive today after traveling from Peoria to Chicago to St. Louis to Morton. It is no wonder the #USPS is so effed up. Scan History
