New Mexico Chief Medical Medical Examiner Heather Jarrell released the cause of death for Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arkawa, on Friday. Hackman died of cardiovascular disease, the examiner determined, placing his date of death on February 18th, when his pacemaker last recorded an abnormal rhythm. Hackman and Arakawa were found dead on February 26th. Jarrell determined Arakawa could have died as early as February 11th of hantavirus. The Mayo Clinic calls hantavirus a pulminary disease “that begins with flu-like symptoms and progresses rapidly to more severe diseases”. At a press conference, Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza reported that Arakawa was seen running errands on surveillance cameras Feb. 11th, and corresponded with her massage therapist. Hackman also had Alzheimer’s disease but tested negative for hantavirus. Both deaths have been ruled natural causes after initially seeming suspicious. Hackman was 95 and Arakawa 65.

A rare virus that killed actor Gene Hackman’s wife in February has been linked to the deaths of three people in California. Officials in Mono County, located between the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountains and the California-Nevada border, announced in a news release Thursday that a third person had died from a hantavirus in the small town of Mammoth Lakes so far this year. Hantaviruses are a group of viruses primarily spread through rodent urine, droppings or saliva and cause fevers, muscle aches and shortness of breath, with a nearly 40% mortality rate, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Officials in Cape Verde have not allowed a cruise ship with a possible hantavirus outbreak to dock at the island nation after three passengers died. The Dutch-flagged MV Hondius was anchored off the coast of Praia, Cape Verde, on Monday. Health officials in the country, though, said they wouldn’t permit the ship to dock there “with the aim of protecting national public health.

At least five U.S. states are monitoring former passengers of a cruise ship experiencing a hantavirus outbreak, health officials said, as the vessel with 17 Americans still on board heads for Spain. The ship, MV Hondius, was sailing early Friday from Cape Verde to Spain’s Canary Islands with about 150 people, including 90 passengers and crew, aboard.

The total number of confirmed and probable cases of hantavirus onboard the MV Hondius cruise ship has risen to 11, including two people confirmed to have died from the virus and one person who remains suspected to have died from the virus. Passengers disembarked the cruise ship in Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, to be transferred to charter flights back to their home countries. On Monday, 16 American cruise ship passengers arrived at the University of Nebraska Medical Center; 15 are in the quarantine unit and one person who tested positive is in the biocontainment unit, officials said. Two other American cruise ship passengers were flown to Atlanta for “further assessment and care,” officials said.
