Tracey and I don’t usually get each other anything for the Hallmark Holidays but I broke down and ordered a #Kindle for Tracey. It should be here Wednesday. She was doing research on the Interwebs while we were deciding whether or not to get one for my brother Alan —— and she got hooked on the idea herself. Fortunately we have good credit so I decided to use it. You only live once and then only for a short time. I will get to use it from time to time when she is at work, etc. I think she will probably spend more time with it than I will though.

We discovered another pitfall of electronic books. Tracey has been reading a series and when she got to book six —— it wasn’t on #Amazon to buy for her #Kindle.

Fortunately we found it elsewhere in another format and I was able to hack it to put it on her Kindle. We got lucky. I would imagine there are many people who would find it very disappointing that they couldn’t get every book in a series in the same format. Damn Digital Rights Management!

Tracey discovered a crack in her new #Kindle. That is really upsetting. The crack is in the edge of the case right next to where the top hinge on the “custom” book cover connects.

I had just read an article a couple weeks ago about Amazon.com agreeing in a class action law suit to replace them for free when this happens. Tracey is most upset because I told her about this when I read the article and she has been extra careful with it.

I called the warranty department and somebody with a very foreign accent (I’m guessing India) answered —— She put me on hold for about five minutes and then some guy came back on the line.

There was no real discussion or argument once I identified myself and explained the situation, he told me the new Kindle and new cover would arrive Monday by UPS. We will have to box up the broken one and haul it to UPS to return it.

My only complaints are that it broke in the first place and I had to strain to understand the heavy foreign accent. I’m surprised the local schools aren’t teaching Indian or Bangladeshian or whatever as a second language. It seems we are going to need it to understand “Customer Service” from now on.

Yesterday was one of those days! Tracey’s replacement #Kindle arrived but there were no instructions with it or a shipping label to return the busted one. So several minutes on hold and transferred to several departments at #Amazon.com to get them to email me what I needed. Wrong label —— I was supposed to get a pre-paid label from UPS and got one from the Post Office they were going to charge me for. More bad music on hold and several transfers and we get the right label emailed.

I made sure everything was good on the new Kindle and took all the books off the old Kindle. I spent a while boxing up the old one, printing the label, etc. I went into Tremont and paid the second installment on our Real Estate Tax (now there’s a ripoff!) then went to Pekin and dropped the dead Kindle off at the UPS to get shipped back. Went to Bob’s for lunch and they have “discontinued” the Taco Salad. Said it is “seasonal”. Good Grief.

Last, but not least, the Internets died at about 2:00 yesterday afternoon and they didn’t get it working again until almost 10 p.m. That was a major Bummer for A&B. They wandered about the house like lost souls.

Hopefully today will go better.
It was six years ago today that I retired.
Sure doesn’t seem that long!

Tracey has her new #Kindle all tricked out now. She had ordered some decals and a new case to put it in. The decals arrived on Friday and the case yesterday.

Our new #Kindle charging wires arrived yesterday. The insulation fell of the original cords for both mine and Tracey’s Kindle.

I called the Kindle toll free customer service number and was surprised to discover they would replace them for free. Very surprised. Now we shall see if these fall apart like the originals or not.

Tracey got a new six inch #Kindle reader. It is just the right size, a bit smaller than a paperback book. She has been getting some eye fatigue reading her iPad because of the glare on the screen.

The new Kindle arrived yesterday and the first thing she discovered is that the instructions are on the help screen. And they aren’t right.

It is becoming more common for technology updates to not be documented in the help section. I suspect the instructions on her gadget were probably right two or three updates ago. She eventually figured most of it out but more by hunting and pecking rather than actually getting good information from the Kindle.

Wouldn’t if be wonderful if the help screens were as diligently maintained as the marketing department updates their advertisements?

Another crappy aspect of Tracey’s new #Kindle is the advertisements. As all technology succumbs to the unbridled greed of corporations we lose control of the content on our gadgets.

The “screensaver” is a front cover of whatever book they are trying to sell at the moment. Not a big deal unless it is some soft porn title or something nasty like Ayn Rand fiction —— then it might be embarrassing to leave laying around. There are also incessant ads built into the library function.

Tracey discovered these ads could be turned off but it would cost her $20 because she supposedly paid a subsidized price to make the original purchase cheaper. Modern capitalism. You pay to own the device but have no control over the advertising content unless you pay to “unsubscribe”. It would seem more ethical to tell you this up front.
