I’ve seen various posts by this person. I don’t know his credentials. I’m pretty sure he has never been faced with speaking truth to power because those who feel entitled to bully, interrupt and talk over you EXPECT you to be silent. Waiting for them to shut up does nothing.

At some point the overbearing ass will trigger your ire with phrases like, “I don’t know who you think you are”; “You people”; “Listen to me!”; “Do what I tell you” —— Whatever. Take that aggravation, lean back, and Laugh Out Loudly. A good old uproarious laughter from the belly on out. And then, in the stunned silence and before they can vent their fury; Do Something.

Often in union conflicts with CAT managers who thought they were the Lords or Ladies of the Universe, I would turn around and walk away. Or if in a meeting, get up and dramatically leave the room. Actions indeed speak louder than words, and nothing dismisses a bully faster than laughing at them. Laughter is the outward expression of humiliation.

Granted this approach is confrontational and not appropriate in many settings; I would still advise leaving the situation immediately even if you don’t laugh at them. For instance, just dismiss that loud mouth relative at a family reunion by going to talk to somebody else. There is no point bothering with the bullies.

I had one manager who would greet me with, “Have you lost weight?”

At first I was puzzled. The next couple times I simply ignored her until one day I interrupted her with a chuckle and told her she should have the courage to call me “Fatty” instead of the ridiculous charade of pretending she thought I had lost weight. She at least had the honest reaction of blushing while she spluttered. I never received that backhanded “compliment” from her again. #LOL
