George Hanamoto inspects some marijuana plants he is growing as his wife, Jean, right, looks on at their home in the Mendocino County community of Willits, CA., Wednesday, May 28th, 2008. Under a law passed in 2000, county residents may grow up to 25 marijuana plants for medical, recreational or personal use. A measure before county voters in the June 3rd primary would scale back the law only allowing six plants to be grown. George Hanamoto, 74, who uses marijuana to relieve glaucoma and for back pain, said cutting plant limits would hurt people like him because growing conditions mean he can’t always get the maximum out of each plant.

Legalizing marijuana is a hotly discussed issue at Seattle’s Hempfest, but there is likely to be extra conversation this year as it will soon be up to voters to decide. The 21st annual Hempfest takes place this weekend. The festival of vendors and entertainment draws thousands of people each year to Myrtle Edwards Park on the Seattle waterfront. Faces behind Washington’s marijuana legalization effort, I-502, are scheduled to speak, including campaign director Alison Holcomb and well-known travel show host Rick Steves. State Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles (D) of Seattle and State Rep. Roger Goodman (D) of Kirkland will also join discussions. Opponents of I-502 will also be at the festival, making their case to voters. Hempfest organizers, however, have elected to remain neutral on the issue, the Seattle Times reports. Washington voters will decide on I-502 this November. If approved, it would create a system of state licensed growers and stores, and impose a 25% tax at each stage. Those over twenty-one could buy up to one ounce of dried marijuana; one pound of a solid, marijuana infused product; or 72 ounces of marijuana infused liquids. Critics argue the initiative conflicts with federal law, works against medicinal users, and could cause an increase in the number of DUI drivers on the road. Politicians have become more comfortable with talking to voters at Hempfest in recent years.

This link from Michael T. about Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s change of mind about #Marijuana use. I have to seriously question the intelligence of any doctor who ever thought marijuana was a menace to society in the first place. They must have slept through the classes on pharmacology if they still think opiates are safer and more effective than pot.

Why I changed my mind on weed

The number of U.S. adults using cannabis and hallucinogens remained at historically high levels in 2023 while alcohol use and binge drinking among younger adults continued to drop, researchers said this week. The latest figures released Thursday from the Monitoring the Future survey by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research and the U.S. National Institutes of Health showed that adults in two age cohorts —— 19 to 30 and 35 to 50 —— are continuing their trend of consuming more and more cannabis and hallucinogens, such as LSD and psilocybin mushrooms.

Generations of parental warnings may not be wrong: A massive study of available data finds teens who use marijuana have significantly worse outcomes at school. Data from 63 studies involving almost 440,000 youths found “cannabis use during adolescence is probably associated with lower school grades; less likelihood of high school completion, university enrollment and post-secondary degree attainment; and increased school dropout rate and school absenteeism,” according to Canadian researchers.
My personal experience speaks quite differently. I spent most of my high school years getting stoned on a regular basis. I graduated in the top 5% of my class. I completed a four-year CAT apprenticeship in the top 20%.

Smoking marijuana during pregnancy may quell your morning sickness, but it could also harm your child’s development, a new study warns. Cannabis exposure in the womb is associated in early childhood with poorer thinking skills, researchers reported Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. These kids also have behavioral problems like impulse control, poor attention and aggressive behavior, researchers found.
I call bullshit. There is no way to quantify who did or did not use cannabis, nor in what quantities, frequency or duration. I suspect the footnotes list “alternative” prescriptions for morning sickness that are medically approved by the for-profit health industry.

The Twitler administration is seeking to reclassify cannabis as a less dangerous substance on Thursday, moving it from Schedule I to Schedule III. The Justice Department announced that it is immediately seeking to reschedule FDA-approved cannabis products, including state-licensed medical marijuana, to Schedule III. Reclassification of medical marijuana as a less dangerous substance would eliminate legal challenges for researchers studying its uses, making it easier to obtain approval to conduct research.
