Tracey and Noah are off to work, Aaron and Ben are at school —— Jake and I have the house to ourselves again!

I wanted to print a couple 5 X 7 copies of a photo and decided I would have it done rather than use up our printer ink.

I called Wal-mart at about 7:30 a.m. yesterday and explained what I wanted to do and the girl said the photo place didn’t open until 9 a.m. So I went to Staples because I knew they opened earlier and they advertise photo printing.

I could not believe what the girl behind the counter started telling me. I told her I wanted two 5 X 7 inch photos and she said the couldn’t get it exact because they first had to guess and then print one on paper to measure with a ruler. Then they could make one side what I wanted and the other side was just whatever it was.

I told her I had already cropped the picture to the right dimensions, that the photo was a 300 dpi digital picture and all she had to do was set the software to reflect that.

She said no —— she couldn’t do that. She then started it printing (on plain paper so we could measure it) and told me to come back in a half-hour to an hour because her copier was slow.

I asked her why she was printing on a copier instead of the photo printer made for that purpose —— she said they always do photos on the copier. She asked me how big the photo was (I had already told her the ratio and dots-per-inch) —— so I told her again.

She said she meant how big was the file. When I told her it was not quite a megabyte she said it would take even longer for such a large file. Large file? They come out of my camera at almost three meg and those aren’t particularly large.

I told her to give me back my usb thumb drive and went to Wal-mart. Either this person has absolutely no training and/or experience or #Staples is using equipment a couple decades old. Whatever the reason it is really ridiculous.

I finally went to #Staples yesterday and got a new computer monitor. The old one had a loose connection or something because it kept turning itself on and off. The menu screen would pop up randomly as well. Now I have a 20 inch wide screen.

I’m not as fond of the wide aspect ratio but I will eventually get used to it I suppose. Since it doesn’t appear I have any choice in the matter.

Tracey and I went to #Staples in Pekin to order a new GPS so Aaron can have one while he is off to college. I had hoped Aaron would buy one of his own but Tracey insisted we should do it. So we got one with lifetime map updates and it should be here next Monday. While we were gone the Frontier repair guy showed up. He told Ben he repaired some frayed wires at the junction box that “looked like a mouse had gotten into” —— sounds like a story to me because the Internet still doesn’t work very well. Such is life I guess.

I suspect I have told some version of this story before about the #Staples gift cards I get from our #DiscoverCard account but I will tell the latest even at the risk of boredom.

The Discover credit card people give me money back for using their credit card. Staples provides an incentive by working with Discover and I get a $25 gift card for $20. Since we buy a lot of computer stuff, DVDs, etc. I find these cards useful. The Pekin Staples is the only one around the area. The only other one even close is in Galesburg and that’s not worth driving to save a bit of money.

The Pekin store recently quit stocking something and I decided to buy it online —— but the online store doesn’t accept the gift cards. And so the fun began when I went to the Pekin Staples and told them to order what I wanted and they all insisted I could do it online and use the gift card there.

It took a while to convince them I knew more about the Staples gift card and the online policy. Along the way we had the familiar nonsense about their equally uneducated understanding of the Staples Rewards card which they all seem to think can be used to buy anything cheaper and actually only works for a few things like paper, printer ink, toner, copy fees and other things I hardly ever buy.

Long story shorter but still long —— they finally ordered what I wanted and I paid for it with the gift card. Now to wait and see if it ever gets here. I should get a job at Staples explaining to their employees and customers how the store policies work because nobody there seems to understand them.

I went to #Staples with the intention of buying a new desk chair but the Staples.com web site was down so I couldn’t use my gift cards to order it. I did buy a 32 GB usb drive and when I got home I copied almost 8,000 songs onto it so we could play them in the new car. Over the years I have managed to convert every one our CDs into MP3 files and we have quite of collection of music.

Old music, I grant you, but every one bought and paid for. I suppose there is some law out there that says I shouldn’t have put them all onto a USB drive —— but screw ‘em —— I’m not going to haul around nearly 800 CDs.

#Staples
I finally got my new desk chair ordered. The receipt says it should be here by Friday but the web site says it might not be until the second week of May. Staples, another technology company that really doesn’t coordinate its technology. I am still getting “personalized” ads from them about a roller ball I want to buy that has been out of stock for almost two months now. I have sent two emails asking them whey they send me these ads for a product they can’t sell. Crickets.

Stopped at #Staples to get a couple USB cables for our new phones. (They use USB 3 cables for data transfer and charging) The sales guy tried repeatedly to sell me the wrong ones because they don’t stock the right ones.

I finally just walked away out of frustration. It really gripes me when I get a salesperson who thinks they know more about what I want than I do.

I went to the front desk and had the lady there order them for me. (I had already looked them up online and had the numbers) She wanted all my information (again), address, phone, etc.

If I had ordered them online they would be shipped to my home for free but if I order them at the store I have to pick them up at the store or pay shipping to get them delivered to my house. I ordered them at the store because you can’t use gift cards (I get them from my #DiscoverCard Rewards account) online.

I asked the gal why she needed all that information for me to pick them up and she shrugged. You just HAVE to fill in all the blanks she says. Oh Well.

We celebrated the end of Daylight Saving Time (#DST) by ordering a large weather clock from #Staples to put in our sun room. It had to be ordered because they don’t stock it. They don’t seem to stock much of anything I ever want.

I reluctantly signed up for their Rewards card to get free shipping to our house because I am tired of going back to the store to pick things up.

I don’t suspect there will be any other benefit and I fear I will be inundated by spam and junk mail as a result. We shall see. In the meantime we await the arrival of our new clock.

Update 11/03/16
We pitched that clock earlier this year. The remote temperature sensors hardly worked and ate batteries. Now we have a smaller version that works a little better but still eats batteries.

Tracey is really interested in getting a new #iPad Pro. She has spent a lot of time on the Internet researching them and we went to #Staples to check them out last evening. They have sales models on display but of course the large screen model was bolted to the table so you couldn’t pick it up to feel its weight and size.

I called one of sales guys over and he was good enough to go to a back room and bring out one for Tracey to check out. We spent a few minutes comparing the two sizes and talking with the sales guys.

Tracey went to do some shopping at #Staples in the early afternoon yesterday. After she had wandered the store for a while and brought her collection of items to the check out counter she was informed they could only take cash because their “computers were down”.

So why couldn’t they inform customers of this when they come through the door? It is always something.

I had some #Staples “Rewards” money so I decided to cash it in along with some money on a gift card we’ve had for a while. So over the weekend I ordered some K-cups for Tracey to take to work. One was a package of caramel flavored coffee and another was green tea.

The order arrived yesterday. The caramel coffee was there but no green tea. Instead we got a printer ink cartridge? I called Staples up and a young lady with a very thick oriental accent answered. We might have done better to communicate via hand signals, pantomime or charades because clearly neither of us understood the other.

She said they would ship the green tea and somebody would come out to get the printer cartridge. Awaiting further updates.

Before I left I put the toner cartridge in a box with the shipping invoice that said it was supposed to be green tea. When I got home it was gone so I guess somebody from #Staples came by and took it. Later in the day UPS arrived with the box of green tea. That is some expensive green tea.
