Ben is totally disgusted. He bought a new keyboard and mouse from Radio Shack. They are both wireless. After he got it all set up he discovered they won’t work together so you can either type or move the mouse, but you can’t hold down a button on the keyboard and use the mouse like he does with a lot of his games.

Now he has to take it all back and start over. I’m not sure he is going to be able to make it work unless he can find them on separate frequencies with individual receivers. That would be more expensive than he probably wants to spend.

Ben had a another rough day yesterday —— he had to make two more trips to town and back before he got his computer stuff right.

He took the remote keyboard / mouse back to Radio Shack and decided to get just a remote mouse. When he got home with that he discovered the battery cover was missing and had to make another trip in to Pekin to get that replaced.

I have to wonder if everybody has this much trouble with getting broken or incomplete products when they buy something or is it just us? It is not as if this stuff is free!

Ben brought home an old IBM Thinkpad laptop from school yesterday. The school was getting rid of it and Ben said he would like to have it.

He hooked it up and was showing it to us and we got into a fun discussion about what computers were like “back in the day”. This is a phrase Ben uses to hint that his Dad is an antique.

A & B thought it was hilarious that my first computer in the early 80s only had 64K of memory and was loaded by a cassette tape.

I told them I once got a new computer that had one megabyte of RAM and a ten megabyte hard drive and thought I would never need more than that. And that it didn’t have a mouse either.

Aaron mentioned he has a terabyte hard drive and would never need anything bigger and we all laughed. Who knows what will be going on in another decade.

By the next decade, we’ll probably all be using petabytes, standard. I suspect, however, that over time we will go back down slightly, because I’m sure someone out there will make formats for games, music, and videos, that take up less space.

Of course, then people could just keep getting the giant hard drives and put more stuff on them

I worked on Tracey’s Palm a little more last evening. I finally got it to reliably connect to our home wireless network and after some frustrating experimentation finally got the email to send and receive as it should. The instructions from my ISP were not clear on some of the settings and I finally stumbled upon some clues in a buried help page.

Our TV has been telling us the batteries in the remote need to be replaced. I wonder what other things our TV knows about the remote? It would be nice if it could tell us where it is when it gets lost? So maybe we will buy some batteries when the remote actually quits working.

#Technology The mouse pointer just disappeared from my screen. Turns out the batteries died in my cordless mouse. Fortunately I found a couple. So why hasn’t anybody invented a self-charging cordless mouse? I sure roll the thing around enough you would think there could be a way? I put a notice out on Facebook and Twitter to get somebody to work on that!

I got a new trackball pointer for the computer this morning. I really liked my old one —— the one on the left —— but, of course, they have stopped making it. The left click button has gotten so bad it hardly works so time for a new one.

I ended up with the one on the right and now I will have a learning curve to train my reluctant fingers and thumb how to work it properly. I also have a couple fewer buttons so lost some functionality as well. Figures. #Technology marching backwards some more.

I have a roller ball instead of a mouse. It works nice for me because I have so much junk on my desk I don’t have a lot of room to zoom around with a mouse. The roller ball just sits in one spot amid the clutter.

The left click button was acting up. It would double-click when it was only supposed to single click. Or I would click and drag a file and all of a sudden it would let go of the file and drop it in a wrong folder. Hate looking for those misplaced files!

So I took it apart the other day and cleaned out all the lint, dust and dog hair. Etc. It continued to act up.

So in keeping with the replacement of the TV remote —— I got a new roller ball yesterday. Wonderful. That same thrill to have a handy gadget actually work properly!

Now the rest of my electronic gadgets are watching me warily in case this sudden urge to replace reluctant technology should lead to another funeral.

One of the fellows at the #RetireeBreakfast last Tuesday was telling me about his new solid state computer hard drive and how unbelievably fast his computer boots up now.

#Technology I spent some time looking them over on the Internet and have decided they are still a little expensive for me. I have gotten used to having a 1 TB drive for my main drive and I don’t want to step down to save money. Eventually the bigger solid state drives will get more affordable.

I tried to pay our bill this morning at The #CrackerBarrel with my smart phone but the cashier girl absolutely refused to cooperate. Every time I tried to scan the smart phone she would push buttons on the cash register and it would void. She insisted she had to push the buttons for it to work and wouldn’t listen when I kept telling her it works EXACTLY like a credit card.

I finally just paid cash. I could have demanded to get a manager or something but decided it wasn’t worth the hassle. Many times cashiers have it in their head that all smart phones work like Apple Pay and they don’t. But they have never been properly trained and they just will NOT listen to reason.

We stopped at #BobEvans in E. Peoria on the way home. I got a bowl of chili and a large salad after waiting too long for service. The chicken on my salad was stone cold.

We sort of got our evens at the checkout though. I used my watch to pay the bill and the register locked up. The manager came over and couldn’t fix it. I could tell they thought it was all my fault for using that “fancy watch”. He couldn’t even reboot the silly thing to get it to work. Eventually he gave up and told me he would take the loss because the line was getting too long waiting on ME.

Ordinarily I would correct him because they weren’t waiting on me. I didn’t do anything wrong. It was his #Technology that wasn’t working properly. But I just smiled, nodded and went on my way.

I will take a couple free meals even if they weren’t the best.

I have to reboot my modem every couple weeks and it is a pain to reach to the back and unplug the cord. I had a momentary brain fart thinking I could use one of the smart plugs to remotely power it off and back on again. On further thought I realized I could turn the modem off that way but wouldn’t be able to turn it back on again because —— the WiFi needs to be on to do that. Sometimes I get ignorant that way.

I got some smart light sockets for the kitchen light but they are just to big around to fit in the fixture. So I will have to rethink how I’m going to do this. I might try smart bulbs.
