I’m still going round and round with the doctor I’m currently seeing about my level of blood sugar medication.

Actually all the discussion is with the office staff and they play telephone tag with our conversations. Why can’t doctors actually talk to their patients on the telephone instead of this endless “he said, she said”?

Anyway I was told I don’t “need” to raise my medication level because she averaged ALL of my blood sugar readings and they average 151 so I’m OK. I’m trying to explain simple math to her (through her surrogate minions) that you need to average the HIGHEST levels of the three times a day readings to arrive at the average HIGH of my blood sugar levels.

When you do that my average HIGH blood sugar level is over 160. Besides that, in order to maintain even this dubious level I can’t eat any bread or potatoes. Not just a little —— none. I would appreciate it if modern medicine could help out a bit more.

I go to Dr. Krall at the Tremont Medical Clinic. All in all she seems to be a caring person —— I just think she’s too cautious about raising the level of medication. Caution is not a bad thing altogether, but I think this should be more under control after four months.

I think some of the delay is in the structure of the medical clinic. Although she is supposed to be “my” doctor, I have also had a different doctor “adjust” my medication based on the daily readings I fax in every week. So between different doctors trying to treat me and the eternal, infernal nonsense of trying to communicate through all the different office staff —— there is delay and confusion. Add to that my natural tendency to speak freely and they all treat me with a bit less respect because I won’t blindly O-bey!

I have to go to the #TremontClinic this morning to get my blood drawn and pee in a cup so they can run the quarterly tests. Then I get to go later this week to let them harass me about the results and collect the fee.

I have been faxing my blood sugar results every couple weeks and the last one I sent they faxed back a warning they might “adjust or change” my medications. This routine is getting old. I feel like a guinea pig and nobody is taking any notes about what they are doing.

Actually they are taking notes —— they just don’t seem to be paying attention to them. Oh Well. That’s healthcare in America —— pay through the nose to convince a doctor to do what you already know should be done.

I just returned from a visit to my doctor’s office and the news is good. It would seem I finally have my blood sugar under control and I even managed to lose a few pounds. I have managed to lose twenty pounds in the last four months and I need to lose a lot more. At least I didn’t gain any!

I tried not to harass my doctor too much. She is a nice lady even though she is a doctor. I did play my reminder tone in my Palm for her when I set up the next appointment —— the tune to the movie “Jaws” —— she even has a sense of humor.

I have to go in the #TremontClinic this morning to get stabbed in the arm with a steel spike so they can take my blood for a spin. Later in the week I will probably be called in to hear a lecture about my blood sugar, my cholesterol, or whatever. And they will make me pay to hear it. Don’t you just love modern medicine?

I got a short letter from my little girl doctor —— my blood sugar is just barely low enough. She wants me to call and make an appointment “Soon”. I guess so she can lecture me about my weight and probably my cholesterol.

I already know I’m too fat and I could care less about my cholesterol or any of the other “fad” afflictions modern medicine wants to get into my pocket to cure.

Yes —— I have to go see my little girl doctor today and I thought the comic was appropriate. I’m the short, fat king complaining. And I don’t think it is disrespectful to call my physician a “little girl doctor” (twice She is a very petite lady who can’t be much older than half my age. Besides, considering what she charges for the pleasure of her company — I think I can be a little ornery about visiting her. #TremontClinic

I just returned from my appointment with Dr. Krall. It looks like I may live! She still counsels me on my cholesterol but I am not convinced it is high enough yet to start taking drugs for it. And my “good” cholesterol is too low —— but I don’t want to mess with it either. Everything else is in good order except my weight and I would really rather deal with that over any other problem right now. I MUST get more exercise and eat less! I almost forgot to mention that I also got a flu shot —— so if I catch the flu and die —— I won’t be taking that shot ever again!

I started my day out today with a trip to the #TremontClinic to get stabbed and some blood drained out of me. The nurse I got this time managed to get the job done in one stab without much bruising. Now we wait to see if my blood sugar is low enough. I think it is going to be just a little too high and will have to go back so the doctor can browbeat me some more.

I went to see my doctor on Monday and she put me on insulin to control my diabetes.

So now I have to check my blood sugar more often and keep track of it so I can adjust the daily dose I take. I think we should have done this at least a year ago —— but then what do I know, I’m just the stupid patient.

I also got a flu shot while I was there and now my arm is a bit stiff.

The medical clinic opens at 7:45 a.m. I had an appointment for 7:50 yesterday morning and arrived as the doors were opened.

They didn’t get to me until 8:15. So they start the day a half-hour behind schedule?

I brought my urine sample but the woman behind the counter told me to keep it and give it to the nurse when I went back. So not only did I have to wait 25 minutes —— I sat in the waiting room with a clear plastic cup of pee which everybody looked at and smiled about.

They took three tubes of blood so it sounds like they plan to run up a good score on lab fees.

I have to go see the doctor this morning at 8:30 a.m. Hopefully I won’t have to wait forever. I am going to try to keep my mouth shut and get through it. That is so out of character for me I’m not sure I can do it. I just hope she doesn’t say anything about the sleep apnea because that would really set me off. She wasn’t the least interested before I took care of it so she better not start wee-weeing on me. I hate it when people say “We this” or “We that” when I did it and there was no “We”.

My trip to the doctor office yesterday would seem to indicate that I am still alive. Other than having to wait a half-hour it went better than I expected —— but then I never expect much.

Everything tested fine except my potassium which both the doctor and Tracey agree was probably just a screwed up test. Of course they had to stick me again to drain some blood to test it again. And of course I will get to pay for the second test to make sure the test THEY screwed up was indeed a screw-up.

There was one absolutely hilarious moment when she exclaimed, “Oh my Gosh! Your cholesterol levels are wonderful! Aren’t those drugs doing a wonderful job!?”

I laughed out loud and reminded her I was “Non-Compliant” —— I refuse to take the damn drugs. She quickly changed the subject.

Oddly enough they couldn’t make my next appointment because “the computer calendar for next year has not been set up yet”. Scary —— a very technical profession with lots of high tech tests they charge through the nose for and they can’t set up a simple calendar on the computer? Why does this not bolster my confidence in their high tech abilities?

I’m supposed to remember to call them back to schedule the visit they demand I make to get permission to get the drugs I know I need. Why do I think I might have some memory problems on this subject?

I finally got an automated call from the doctor office to tell me my potassium blood levels were fine. Actually I got a message to call another machine to enter secret box numbers and pin numbers to hear a recording. Why they don’t just call you and tell you is beyond me. Next, I wonder how much it is going to cost me to pay for the second test because they screwed up the first one.

I have an appointment to get blood drawn this morning —— I can hardly wait. Late last week I had a message on my phone from the #TremontClinic telling me Dr. Krall hadn’t seen me for a year and had to make appointments for labs and to see her. I think they start a half-hour late right off the bat! The first nurse stabbed me two times, digging for a vein both times and no blood. The second nurse nailed it first time. They took three tubes of blood but most of the tests aren’t necessary anyway but I guess they are good to make them money.

I got another call from #PharmacyWalgreens Mail-Order Pharmacy yesterday. I have been trying for almost a month to get my 1 ml. insulin syringes. Evidently the prescription ran out and that little girl doctor at #TremontClinic decided to get involved.

She had already meddled with one prescription and changed my blood sugar meds without permission or telling me. I quit going to her over a year ago and still she is screwing with me.

This time she changed my syringe and needle size. I called the clinic and told them I did not want this dizzy dame to ever, EVER, mess with my prescriptions. NEVER, EVER AGAIN is what I told the hapless lady who answered the phone.

She tried to tell me it was their “policy” for the doctor in the office to renew prescriptions.

I told her there is a huge difference between renewing a standing prescription and changing it every time she gets a whim. I want the right needles and I want them on time.

I also asked to have the results of my blood tests faxed or mailed to me. She says they are still in the doctor’s IN basket and they want the doctor to “share the results”.

The tests were done on the 13th and they haven’t been looked at by the 22nd?

I told her I didn’t care where they were, I was paying for them and I wanted them. At least I could look at them since it doesn’t appear the doctor wants to “share” them.

Another trip to the doctor’s office yesterday. He took a chunk out of the lesion on the side of my head to send for a biopsy to see how much more he will have to carve off next week.

I tried to talk him into just removing the entire thing but he seems worried about having to cut too much and scar my handsome face.

I told him as long as he didn’t cut off something I need like my ear or something I could care less what it looked like. Oh Well. I tried. So I have a couple stitches. It doesn’t really hurt but it does itch like crazy.

My trip to the doctor yesterday was a disappointment. I waited there almost an hour thinking he would finally remove the lesion. He didn’t.

All he did was remove the stitches from the biopsy and tell me the lab results.

Tracey was right and I owe her a meal —— I have basal-cell carcinoma. This is the most common form of skin cancer and the least dangerous.

The doctor said it was good news and bad news. The good news being that if you are going to get skin cancer this is the one to get. The bad news —— it is still skin cancer.

So now I have yet another appointment the first week in December to get the thing cut off. This has been my third visit and we haven’t progressed very far at all.

Well after two weeks, eight calls to #PharmacyWalgreens Mail Order, two calls to the #TremontClinic, two calls to RESTAT (my drug insurance) and four calls to the local Walgreen’s pharmacy —— I finally have the proper blood sugar pills.

I got them from the Walgreen’s in Pekin.

Sheesh what an ordeal. I will eventually get the wrong pills in the mail and then a mailer to send them back in. Hopefully that will all go as planned or we will have to start all over again.

All this nonsense because the pharmacies and the insurance companies are in charge and are too greedy to run an efficient operation. I suspect all this run-around is designed to discourage people and many people just do without or continue to take drugs that don’t work as well for them. What happened to America?

Once I have shaken the doctor’s hand and we exchange a few pleasantries (and, of course, pay a large fee) they will then renew my drugs. Otherwise I guess they will just let me die. Yesterday was a bad day for dealing with Walgreen’s. A week ago I called the Court St. #PharmacyWalgreens to tell them one of my prescriptions would need filling. It is the only one I get from them because they have to “special order” my brand because the generic doesn’t work as well.

I go through the usual routine of having to tell the clerk that, NO, they don’t stock it because the generic they stock is not the version I need. I explain that I am calling a week early so they will have time to order the three months supply of 180 tablets. I stress the fact that the last two times I drove to Pekin from Tremont only to have them give me a partial refill because they had to order it and then had to make another trip to town.

So I take Tracey to work yesterday and on the way I stop at Walgreen’s on Court Street. They give me 10 tablets out of the 180 —— again. I can’t for the life of me understand what more I can do to get these people to order them ahead and NOT notify me my prescription is ready when it is not!

It gets better (actually worse), when I went to the doctor last Friday they agreed to increase my insulin order from five vials every three months to seven vials. This is through the mail order Walgreen’s. I got an email telling me they have shipped five vials.

So I call the #TremontClinic and they say they did it right and I call the Walgreen’s Mail Order and they say they didn’t and I call the Tremont Clinic and they say they will take care of it. We seem to have our own kind of special bad luck when it comes to these things?

Tracey, Mom, and I have spent a good deal of time on the phone dealing with the #MedicalMafia over the past week. Without getting into details it was determined by the doctor a week ago Wednesday that Mom needed a test done.

The office girl who was supposed to schedule the test was (and is) clearly clueless and couldn’t tell us what the test entailed. Eventually we were told that the test wouldn’t be covered by Medicare under the diagnosis the doctor gave.

Tracey and the nurse at the scheduling department of St. Francis both called the #TremontClinic and gave them a list of the different diagnosis that are covered but we were eventually told the doctor wouldn’t change the diagnosis.

This is a real Catch 22 —— without the test he can’t tell if Mom has the condition that will be covered so he won’t give that diagnosis because it would be “fraud” for him to say so without knowing. Except there is no way to actually diagnose the problem without the test, that is the reason for test.

So we are going early this morning to St. Francis to have the test done and hoping the results will be sufficient to get Medicare and Mom’s insurance to pay the minimum $980 bill.

Update:
Turned out it was all covered my Medicare regardless of the code. The problem is too few people in medicine care if insurance covers the procedures.

The new meter arrived a couple days ago and is pretty nice. So I call the #TremontClinic and tell them to send the prescription for the new test strips and lancets.

The state has changed the law on handicap parking placards so we have to make another application to get one for Mom. Tracey filled out the form appropriately and I took it to the doctor’s office yesterday morning.

I was told Mom would probably have to come in to see the doctor for this. I told them that was foolish —— just give it to the doctor and have him sign it.

I got a call a while later from yet another office girl basking in the doctor’s authority —— she insists Mom has to make an appointment and that we have “spoiled” the application by filling in the blanks. Utter Bullshit!

I asked her if the form had been given to the doctor or not and she said the doctor wasn’t even in the office. I told her I didn’t appreciate her making ultimatums, that the law requires the doctor to make the decision —— not some chair warmer in his office.

Mom has been on oxygen for years, can’t walk without a walker or wheel chair and has had a placard for years. I told her it was a hardship for Mom to get back and forth to these foolish appointments and it was the height of foolishness to require this for the very placard she needs to avoid undue physical distress.

I told her to give the damn thing to the doctor and let him decide whether to sign it or not.

Regardless the outcome of this kerfuffle, I talked with Mom and she agreed we need to get her started with another doctor’s office. This insanity of bickering with the office staff over every decision is just too ridiculous to continue.

So I started the “new patient” process with another office and it will be at least 6 weeks before we can make that transition. What a pain in the butt!

He wants lab work done and I got appointments scheduled for that and my next visit. The gal behind the counter was having a bad day I guess. First she scheduled the labs for next April and I had to tell her the doctor really would rather have them sooner, like next week.

Shortly after furnace guy left I went to pick up Mom and we went to the medical clinic. Next I will have to bug them about providing me the results of the labs I am paying for. I told them to put a hold on shipping the Humalog until I could see if there was a cheaper option.

I called the insurance company and was told that another brand, Novalog or Novalin, would be the “preferred option” for my insurance. One is $16 and the other has no co-pay, it is completely covered.

Then I called #TremontClinic to begin the usual run around to get my prescription changed from one brand to another. As usual the girl who answered the phone the first time didn’t know anything and said “somebody” would call me back.

Two hours later I called again and a different girl told me the doctor would have to make the decision and they would call me back today. Fat chance of that happening. I just hope against reason that the message about WHY I want to change it is passed along to the doctor.

So I pee in a cup and then wait over an hour. The doctor comes in and talks about everything but the reason I was there. Finally, as I was leaving, I ask him when I will find out about the results of the test and he says, “Oh! I’m sorry. I guess I should have told you that right away! Evidently I am the target of the #MedicalMafia lately. First the call from the optometrist office and then yesterday I got a letter from the office of my “Primary Physician”.

The first line reads, “We have not yet received the results of your lab(s) which Dr. John [redacted] has ordered.”

It goes on to list blood and urine tests and states if I have had these done I am to let them know where so they can request a copy of the results. And if I have not done so I “may” do so at my earliest convenience by calling the office.

I thought I had explained to these people that I am now retired and I don’t take “orders” from anybody. (Except maybe my darling bride Tracey, but she rarely bothers anymore).

I have decided rather than call the #TremontClinic office and once again explain my position in no uncertain (and perhaps colorful) terms it would be wisest to just throw the damn letter away and pretend it never arrived. Just like I do with the other junk mail.

It seems I wrote up my Curmudgeon report a little prematurely. I had another phone conversation yesterday with yet another minion of the #TremontClinic. They can’t seem to get their notes straight and had to ask once again how much Metformin I take, when, etc. I’m sure this is at least my fourth or fifth call since the last appointment and they still can’t get it right.

I asked the nurse if they didn’t have this all backward. Wasn’t I spending hundreds of dollars for THEM to tell me what medicine to take? I had to hang up before I got too snotty. It is hard to get just snotty enough without starting to shout.

#MedicalMafia #TremontClinic
I had this conversation with my doctor several years ago when she persisted in urging me to take daily aspirin. It bothers me that medical professionals are so out of date in their advice.

Two important studies were presented at the European Society of Cardiology meeting suggesting little-to-no benefit among those taking aspirin to prevent heart attack and stroke. Instead, they found a slightly increased risk of bleeding events -- mainly stomach and intestinal bleeding.

Called #TremontClinic first and they “overlooked” my insulin prescription. I’m glad I started with them instead of the #PharmacyWalmart. Now I wait to see if it gets corrected.
