Following years of aging in the San Francisco Bay area’s “mothball fleet”, the 887 foot long USS Iowa, a ship that once carried President Franklin Roosevelt to a World War Two summit to meet with Churchill, Stalin and Chiang Kai Shek is coming to life once again as it is being prepared for what is most likely its final voyage.

On May 26th, 2012, the 79-year-old battleship USS Iowa is towed just beyond the Golden Gate Bridge and out into the ocean on its final voyage to Southern California and its permanent home as a floating museum on the San Pedro waterfront.

In 1989, 47 sailors were killed when a gun turret exploded aboard the USS Iowa in the Caribbean. (The Navy initially suspected that a dead crew member had deliberately sparked the blast, but later said there was no proof of that.) #USSIowa
