In 1941, novelist and critic Adeline Virginia (Stephen) Woolf, 59, drowned herself near her home in Lewes, East Sussex, England. #VirginiaWoolf Troubled by mental illness throughout her life, Virginia Woolf was institutionalized several times and attempted suicide twice before drowning herself by filling her overcoat pockets with stones and walking into the River Ouse.
