I saw this blurb on Twitter about how #Microsoft announced that #Win7 was more vulnerable to ransomware than #Win10.

I guess I missed the part about how they would update Windows 7 so those users would be safe. Surely they wouldn’t be using this horrible virus as a cudgel to push people to upgrade to Windows 10?

So I’ve embarked on another #Win10 update. I have been reading about some of the ransomware viruses out there and I tripped over this new update (Windows 10 version 1709) to Windows that could help prevent hard drive encryption.

It took six hours to download the update. Mainly because I have such slow DSL speeds. It took about another half-hour to actually run the update. My first impression is that the only thing I would find of value is the protected file system. There are other changes but none that I feel I will need or use.

I immediately discovered some changes to my registry had to be restored. Especially the focus of windows on mouse hover. It was so fast it would not work at all. Another change was cosmetic but I prefer to have the default Windows font to be Consolas.

Next I found that my Adobe pdf program had to be added to the white list for controlled file access. Next up was Paintshop.

Another thing is I can no longer use my batch files to name and rename files. Which makes sense if you want to protect a file system. So until I can find a work around I will have to turn off the protection each morning while I update my Blog files and then turn it back on again.

I’m sure there will be other changes to get used to or customize but so far I can live with it.

I have been struggling with the #Win11 File Manager for some time because of the file path drop-down issue (among other kluge fixes). I discovered a link to revert back to the #Win10 File Manger interface. SwitchExplorer

Note: SwitchExplorer.exe requires Windows 11 22H2 build 3007 or higher.
