10/18/2007 Broken GovernmentTracey and I were watching CNN last evening and there was this GQP wrangler going on about how he wanted the gay guy from Idaho to retire early since he wasn’t going to run for re-election.He said he wanted this so the new guy could “start getting seniority”. A little bell went off in my head and I have thought about this a bit. It never dawned on my why Congress Critters leave office before their terms are up. It makes sense though because the new person appointed from the incumbent party then becomes the incumbent to vote for / against at the upcoming election. It is a way for the party to place their candidates without bothering the people with a primary election and gives the new incumbent a considerable edge with name recognition. Just another example of how our political process doesn’t serve us. |
