Vienna • Human skulls and bones are piled up in an alcove in the crypt under Saint Michael’s Church in the center of Vienna. Coffins and the crypt are being prepared for restoration work. The crypt was used for about 4,000 burials from 1560 to 1783, and many corpses became mummified because of special microclimate conditions. The coffins and corpses are in danger of being destroyed by beetles and high humidity. |
