The Dallas Museum of Art returned a ceramic mosaic named Orpheus Taming Wild Animals (A.D. 194), from the Eastern Roman Empire, to Turkish officials Monday after learning that the piece was probably looted from an archeological site. The artwork features the mythic poet Orpheus playing a lyre as he sits on a rock surrounded by animals, which he tames with the soothing music. The museum bought the piece at public auction in 1999, officials said. |
