A boat stands on a dock after it was lifted by an earthquake triggered tsunami in Coquimbo, Chile, Thursday. Several coastal towns were flooded from small tsunami waves set off by late Wednesday’s 8.3 earthquake, which shook so strongly that rumbles were felt across South America.

An aerial picture shows the damage caused by strong waves due to the 8.3 earthquake in the village of Los Vilos, some 200 kilometers north of Santiago de Chile, Chile on September 17th 2015. According to the Chilean Interior Minister, Jorge Burgos, the death toll from the 8.4 quake that hit parts of Chile has risen to eight, while one person remains missing. The Government has put the entire Chilean coast on high alert over tsunami fears leading to the evacuation of 1 million people. The sea advanced inland at several points on the Chilean coast, mainly in the region of Coquimbo, where authorities were waiting for daylight to assess the damage caused, as more than 500 people spent the night in shelters.
