About 1,900 people gathered at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England, to celebrate the shortest day of the year.  Druids, pagans and tourists gathered at 0800 GMT to see the sun rise.  The pagan tradition is also known as Yule and is one of the oldest winter celebrations.  The Druids (Celtic priests) would cut the mistletoe that grew on the oak tree and give it as a blessing.

The Summer Solstice at Stonehenge is a truly magical time to be there. It’s an ad hoc celebration that brings together England’s New Age Tribes (neo-druids, neo-pagans, Wiccans) with ordinary families, travelers and party people.
Solstice nowadays is a peaceful and moving experience, but that wasn’t always the case. For years, Wiltshire police fought pitched battles with the people who were drawn to see the sunrise on the longest day of the year at Stonehenge.

Laser scan of the Great Trilithon reveals its extremely straight, neat outline and smooth surface, compared with all the other trilithons. It suggests that Stonehenge creators made deliberate efforts to shape and dress it more carefully due to its special position on the solstice axis, just as they did for other stones that flank this axis.

Susie Ro Prater leads the Shakti Sings choir as druids, pagans and revelers gather in the center of Stonehenge, hoping to see the sun rise, as they take part in a winter solstice ceremony at the ancient neolithic monument of Stonehenge near Amesbury on Tuesday in Wiltshire, England. Despite a forecast for rain, a large crowd gathered at the famous historic stone circle - a UNESCO listed ancient monument - to celebrate the sunrise closest to the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year - the event is claimed to be more important in the pagan calendar than the summer solstice, because it marks the ‘re-birth’ of the Sun for the New Year.
