Tracey drove the #Taurus to work yesterday because her bug was in the shop. We were talking over dinner and she said she noticed an odor in the car on her way to work. Noah had been driving the car a couple years. He had cleaned all his stuff out but had left behind an odor.

Tracey said she figured it out —— it smelled like she was sitting in a “gym bag”. So now I get to drive the Gym Bag and I’m sure that name will stick for as long as we own the car. Guess I need to get some Fabreze and spray a bottle or two all over the seats and trunk. Gym Bag Indeed!

The sun is just coming up and as I look out upon the splendor of nature I wonder —— why the heck do we have so many cars in our yard!?

We now have five (5) cars. Actually we have four and Noah has one, but still —— three of them have over 100,000 miles and we are trading the newest (the #VW Beetle) off on the new #Honda Hybrid (if it ever gets here). Here’s the logic. The #AstroVan is ancient and paid off. We use it for a bus to haul everybody everywhere and like a truck when we need building materials. We have to keep the van. The #Blazer is mine. Period. We have to keep it too. The #Taurus was Noah’s car and now it’s just a spare, but it is also paid off. It is also nearly worthless in resale value (like the van) and we have two new drivers coming along next spring. We have to keep it. That leaves us with the soon to be traded VW which is Tracey’s work car. Since we have to keep her we have to keep her car.

So I sit here and watch a beautiful sunrise. The new rays of light glistening upon the dew covering our used car lot.

I managed to pack the snow down on the driveway last evening so we can get the two #Hondas out. I’m sure Noah and Tracey will appreciate not having to scrape windows! Today I am going to work on getting either the #Blazer or the #Taurus into the garage too so I don’t have to scrape either.

Tracey took Aaron and Ben out driving a bit in her car yesterday. It was the first time they got to drive the new #Honda Hybrid and they were really impressed with it. It won’t be the same for them now when they have to drive the old clunker #Taurus.

I finally took the #Taurus to get the air conditioner charged up. I had called around and found the cheapest place was The Grease Spot on Court St. in Pekin. They didn’t do a whole lot of checking to see if there were any leaks —— they just vacuumed the system empty and then put the refrigerant back in to the proper amount.

I didn’t really need the air conditioning yesterday but it was nice to feel cold air coming out of it again. Now when the temperatures soar I can at least drive around in my car and cool off if I can’t afford to cool my house!

I finally got word on our busted #Taurus last evening. $400 to fix all the leaking rusty brake lines. I hate to pay that but I hate crawling around under a rusty car more. I just keep telling myself it is still less to maintain the old thing than it would be to have a monthly payment for a new car.

I will have to wait until Monday to pick it up because there’s nobody home to haul me to the repair shop to get it.

Tracey is going to dump me off at the auto shop to pick up the #Taurus before she goes to work. I just hope we won’t have anymore expensive auto repairs for another few months at least.

I still feel guilty sometimes when I think of the money I could save if I did the work myself —— but I hate to even think about crawling around under a car again. I’ve done my share of that and it is no fun. Especially without the proper tools or a lift to get the car up where you can work on it.

Ben and I dropped the #Taurus off to get the oil changed yesterday; it is nice to have a couple more drivers in the house to help with dropping off and picking up our fleet of vehicles when they need work.

I told them to find a way to fix the rattle of the brake lines they left us with. A few weeks back the repair shop charged an exorbitant amount to replace some brake lines and just left them dangling under the car.

Once you get going down the road they start vibrating and rattling under the car and just about drive you crazy with the noise. Not to mention that it is not so too good to have them banging around under there vibrating apart again. The next question —— will they try to charge me for completing the job I already paid for?

Ben went with me to pick up the #Taurus from the oil change. They clamped all the brake lines together and fixed the rattle as I had asked.

The shop owner was all heart and didn’t charge me anything for not doing that in the first place. Again —— I bit my tongue and walked away. Who knows —— I may learn to keep my mouth shut yet. *NOT!*

We had some excitement last evening. Aaron lost the keys to the Ford #Taurus. We know they have to be somewhere between the car and the house or in the house because he drove home. Tracey, Aaron and I spent a lot of time looking for them and still haven’t found them. I can’t imagine where he could have misplaced them but he did a good job this time. I suspect we will find them some day but for now they have disappeared.

CAR KEY UPDATE:
On the way out the door this morning Aaron found the car keys laying in the grass next to the driveway. Mystery solved! We are all so happy, especially Aaron, now he can drive himself instead of having to ride with Ben.

The #Taurus was repaired too. It was the alternator which had busted. I thought the price on the rebuild was bit high but #Raisor told me it was worth paying for an original with lifetime warranty rather than buy a cheap one and have to replace it in a year or two.

I suppose I will have to trust him on this one. Ben and I went to retrieve the car around 4 p.m. and the snow had almost melted off the roads by then.

We were just going out the door yesterday to go out to supper with Mom when Aaron asked if he could go visit a friend. Ben had already taken the #Taurus to go visit with cousin Tom and we were taking the #Blazer.

We aren’t comfortable with the boys driving the #Honda Hybrid so we told him he could go if he could arrange transportation with his friend. When we got home at around 7:30 in the evening Aaron was still not home and called a short while later wanting a ride home.

Ben went after him and I gave Aaron a short lecture when he got home about arranging transportation home as well as getting to wherever. The difference in age and viewpoint. I can’t remember how free it can be to only worry about where I want to go and never think of how I will return home.

Noah has the weirdest luck with cars. I took his #Honda in to get it looked at yesterday. He drove our Ford Taurus to work.

The service department looked his car over for at least an hour and couldn’t find anything wrong with it except it will need new tires real soon. I drove it around their lot a bit and sure enough — no more noise.

The only thing we could figure is maybe some sand or road salt had gotten into the brakes and was grinding between rotor and pad and then had washed out.

I had gone specifically late in the day so Noah could pick me up from the dealership should it turn out we would have to leave it for repairs.

So I called him on the cell phone to tell him his good news (they didn’t even charge us for the hour spent looking) and he was happy to hear that. Then he said it was his turn to tell me about what happened to the #Taurus.

He was run off the road by a big truck and smashed into the guard rail on the way to work in the snow storm.

After making sure he was all right I quizzed him about the car and it didn’t sound good. He said it was still driving OK so I let him drive it home.

I took it out for a drive when he got home and immediately realized something was not right at all. In fact I wouldn’t have let him drive it home from Peoria on the interstate had I known how bad it is.

I think he broke something major in the front suspension because the tires won’t track properly; it keeps jerking one way and then another. There is a large crease in the front quarter-panel and one of the side reflectors is obliterated.

Still, all in all I would rather fix the car and have Noah all in one piece. And it turned out better to crunch the old Ford instead of his new Honda, but it is so weird the way it all worked out.

I drove it to the repair shop in Morton last evening and I am debating about whether to make Noah pay for all of it or just half.

It was an interesting afternoon yesterday. First, the repair shop called to tell me the damages on the #Taurus. I was surprised it wasn’t worse than what he told me.

He’s going to put in a used strut and spindle assembly which will save me a couple hundred dollars over brand new.

He told me I need to replace the front tires because the left one had a splinch in it from the crash and the other was about shot anyway. So I made some phone calls and found that #FarmAndFleet in Morton has the best price for an inexpensive tire (I hate to use the word cheap!)

I grabbed a shopping cart on the way in and headed back to the tire desk. I was talking to the tire desk dude when a young fellow wandered by and stole my cart.

I didn’t notice until he was clear across the store, about a 100 feet or so, and I yelled at him to bring my +*&^ cart back! That got everybody’s attention.

I was still fussing and fuming when the fellow sheepishly returned it mumbling about nobody using it. I told him he sure didn’t haul the corn starch thing all the way back there and it didn’t just appear there magically.

So the tire desk dude suddenly gets a hitch in his britches and gets my tires real quick. I think he just wanted to get cranky old me out of there.

So I got my tires all paid for and loaded up and as I am shoving them out the store this lady at the cash register up front yells at me to stop and asked if I had paid for the tires.

I yelled right back at her asking if they have a lot of tires stolen?

She says no, but people usually stop when they come by the registers up front.

I ask why. She says so they know we paid for them.

I told her you can’t get a tire from the tire desk until you pay for it because they keep them locked up in the back —— except for the ones nailed to the wall to show you what they look like.

So I ask her if she wants to see my receipt (we’re still bellowing at each other because she’s too imperious to come to me and I’m to ornery to go back to her) and she says, “No, that will be OK.”

Still blocking the door I bellow back, “Then why the heck did you stop me for this ridiculous tirade if you don’t need any proof anyway?” I left shaking my head.

A lot of customers were shaking their heads as well; whether with me or at me I don’t care. But it was an interesting day at the Fart & Fleem yesterday.

I hoped they would get the #Taurus put back together yesterday but the repair shop says they couldn’t get all the parts together in time. It is supposed to be done by 3:00 this afternoon, so we shall see.

I am surprised at how mixed my feelings are about not having a car around all day. I don’t mind having a ready excuse as to why I can’t go get groceries or whatever — but I also feel somehow trapped by not having a car. Even though I didn’t have any plans to go anywhere.

I picked Aaron & Ben up from school yesterday and we went to pick up the #Taurus from #Raisor’s repair shop in Morton. I drove the Taurus home and it seems to be in good order once again. It is still a bit rough but it does have almost 125,000 miles on it and I couldn’t expect them to erase all evidence of that.

Hi Tammy —— We still have the #Taurus and the #Blazer here at the house (both with well over 100,000 miles). Tracey has been riding her scooter to work so we are still in good shape for transportation unless one of the clunkers starts acting up. That’s why we usually let the #Honda Hybrid be the one for any trips more that 20 - 30 miles, it is the newest. I think horses are more expensive to maintain than cars! Ever hear the phrase “eats like a horse”?

Aaron has been working after school every afternoon on his Senior Class Video Project so he has been driving himself to school separately from Ben.

Aaron took the #Honda Hybrid, Ben drove the #Taurus to school and I took the #Blazer to have breakfast with Michael T.

Tracey had to be at work by noon and with all the cars in use, she couldn’t ride her scooter to work because it was raining so I had to take her to work and then pick her up again last night at 9 p.m.

Once Aaron gets this project done he and Ben can go back to riding together and we will be back to normal with too many cars again.

Tracey was home by 4:30 yesterday afternoon and we went to Morton to pick up the #Taurus from the repair shop. They replaced the rear brake rotors, turned the front rotors and new brake pads all around. The old car definitely needed new brakes!

We stopped at Woody’s in Groveland on the way home for supper. We didn’t even try to drive through Morton with all the Pumpkin Festival traffic.

Tracey and I trekked back into Morton to pick up the #Taurus. We stopped for some food first at Ruby Tuesdays —— it has been some time since we have been there and they have new menus, again. It seems every time we go they have a new menu printed up. They must raise the prices pretty regularly.

The brake noise was a pebble caught in the brake pad assembly. They tried to talk me into flushing the radiator but I declined. We spend enough money on that old clunker without looking for reasons to spend more. I suppose if the radiator clogs up I will regret the decision but over the years I have learned that most of these “preventative” measures have been to prevent the repair shop from making less money.

The air conditioner in the #Taurus is kaput. Tracey thought it was the refrigerant and took it to be looked at but was told it was the clutch on the compressor. Aaron told me the knob on the dash is messed up too. I guess I will be fooling with that some this weekend.

A&B just left for ICC. They are riding together today so I will be able to take the #Taurus to town to get the oil changed and the tires rotated front to back. The rear tires have a lot more tread on them since they are the newer tires and I think they should be on the front for better traction this winter. The guys still haven’t shoveled the garbage pit out of the floorboards so I will be a bit embarrassed about that. I don’t want to even think about what is on those floorboards though so I’m sure not going to even attempt to clean that mess up.

It’s going to cost us a small fortune to repair the air conditioner on the #Taurus but I told them to do it anyway. I am just too spoiled I guess. A&B will ride to ICC together today and I will take Tracey to work. Hopefully the Ford will be back home this evening.

Our car didn’t get finished yesterday as we had hoped. Something about getting the wrong parts. I took Tracey to work this morning. A&B will have to take the #Honda Hybrid and the #Blazer. Aaron and I are on the outs for now. He is supposed to put the car key back in the kitchen when he gets home so the key is available for someone else —— like me.

He can’t seem to remember to do that so I told him from now until I change my mind he can’t drive the #Honda Hybrid. Since I never drive the #Taurus (because it is a teenage trash-pit car) I won’t have to deal with no key for the Hybrid if he doesn’t drive it and “forget” to put the key where it belongs (not in his pocket).

#33 Click this link to see Blog page --> 12/03/2010

We have all three cars back home and in good order. The brake warning light on the #Taurus was simply that it was low on fluid. The oil and filter has been changed.

The brake noise is a loose parking brake cable. It hasn’t enough tension to keep the parking brake from dragging just a little so there is a slight squealing noise when you first start driving it. They worked on it a bit but didn’t replace anything on it. I don’t think we will mess with it unless it gets too terrible.

Added to this we are again juggling cars because we took the #Honda Hybrid in last evening so they could look at the brakes, change the oil, etc. (Getting it ready for trip in May!) So we will be driving the Taurus. I hope to swap the #Taurus for the Hybrid this afternoon so they can change the oil in the Taurus. I just wish we could afford a few more cars this is such fun!

I spent a good part of yesterday dealing with transportation for Aaron and getting our broken Ford #Taurus towed to the shop. Aaron called me from ICC to tell me the car wouldn’t start and he had to be at the orthodontist’s office in fifteen minutes.

So I first had to find him in one of the many ICC parking lots and then get him to Peoria in time for his appointment. I waited a little over an hour there until Aaron got done.

We then went back and tried to use jumper cables to start the car but no luck. I called my towing insurance people and after a lot of foolishness about the correct address, zip code, etc. they finally scheduled a towing company to get the car 2.5 hours later.

The girl told me we had to wait all that time so we could sign some invoice. I called the tow company and they thought that was a goofy idea too and told me to put the keys under the floor mat and go home. The car wouldn’t start so nobody was going to steal it!

I called the repair shop later in the day and the car had safely arrived. Now we wait to find out how expensive it is going to be —— I vote for a new battery as that would likely be cheapest.

We have another dent in our Ford #Taurus. Ben went to visit a friend and his friend’s mother backed into the passenger door on the driver’s side. I haven’t looked at it yet but we told Ben we probably won’t fix it as long as the window works and the door can be opened and closed without problems. That poor thing is so banged up one more dent won’t be noticed.

I got a call from an insurance agent yesterday about the mishap with our Ford #Taurus. I told him to close the claim because we wouldn’t be asking for repairs or anything. I can’t see any reason to put points on their insurance rates since the Ford is already a “beater” in the truest sense of the word. Now that door matches the driver’s door that Austin backed into

#38 Click this link to see Blog page --> 06/18/2011

Aaron is spending the weekend in Davenport, IA, so we decided it would be better if he drove the #Honda. I suppose the #Taurus would make it there OK but we thought the Honda was a better bet.

This leads me to explain how I wasted 1.5 hours of my day yesterday. The Honda needed an oil change and I managed to get an appointment at the Honda dealership in Peoria. I told the “technician” all I wanted was the oil and filter changed. Absolutely nothing else. No wiper blades, recall work, software upgrades —— nothing but the oil and oil filter.

I no sooner finished saying this than the guy says I have a lot of other things he HAS to do because the mileage says so.

Again I repeat, “Just change the oil and the oil filter —— nothing else.”

After sitting in the waiting room about a half-hour the guy shows up with a dirty air filter (they probably keep it under the desk to threaten people with) and proceeds to tell me I need to spend another $80 to change the engine and cabin air filters. And my tires need rotated. And my wiper blades need replaced. And —— I interrupted him and loudly proclaimed for all to hear, “Just change the oil and oil filter like I told you twice already!”.

So the guy wanders off and I sit waiting. While I am waiting these “technicians” keep coming to other people telling them need new tires, front end alignment, etc. Each time making it sound like their lives are in danger if they don’t spend more money on their cars.

Finally the guy comes to get me and after paying he walks me out to the car and proceeds to explain their million point “safety check” which proves I should have spent hundreds of more dollars on fixing things they found that are in dire need of attention.

We have these little green air valve covers that show green when your tires have enough air and are clear when the tire is low. I interrupted the guy in the middle of his swindle and asked him if they checked the air in the tires.

He says of course they do. I point at the left rear tire valve that shows the tire is low on air and ask him why he didn’t put air in the tire. While he is stuttering and stammering I take my car key away from the jerk, get in the car and drive away.

Odd how they only “inspect” things they can make money off of but can’t be bothered to put a little free air in a tire? All this nonsense turned a fifteen minute oil change into a 1.5 hour sales pitch. I hate car dealerships.

Ben and I went to get the #Taurus. The repair guy said he took the rear brakes apart and there was nothing mechanically wrong with them —— BUT —— he said they were caked with dirt and small gravel as if the car has been driven a lot on gravel roads.

Hmmmm —— it seems I will never convince our boys to STOP driving down the gravel road between Allentown and Broadway. I know it is nice shortcut but it is tearing up our tires and brakes (not to mention my checkbook!).

Aaron told us the brakes on the #Taurus are acting up again. The brake pedal goes all the way to the floor and they barely work. I looked at the brake fluid reservoir and it was almost empty. Tracey and I went to Pekin to get some lunch and brake fluid.

I put the brake fluid in when we got back and had Tracey pump the brakes while I kept putting more in —— I thought maybe there was just air in the lines. Turns out it was all leaking out onto the driveway. There is a leak somewhere near the right front tire.

I also had to go back to Stake-n-Shake to retrieve the Ford keys. They fell out of my pocket when I reached into my pocket for some money to leave a tip. Fortunately somebody had given them to the cashier and she had them when I called to check on it. I’m just glad I thought to call them in the first place.

We have the #Taurus back. The right front brake assembly self destructed. The repair guy said it looked like the brake pad came loose, tore up the rotor and then jammed up bad enough to break the calipers —— that is why the fluid was leaking. He replaced the pads and rotor on the left side too. So we have all new brakes on the front. It is always something. I’m just glad Aaron made it home safe when all this happened!

I had to go to ICC last evening to rescue Aaron. The battery died on the #Taurus and we had to jump start it. Now it would appear one of my tasks for today is going to be replacing the battery. As usual when one of the cars goes down we have to juggle the others to get everyone where they need to be but it is far easier now that Tracey has the VW. At least we won’t be dropping people off and picking them up in elaborate schedules to get everybody everywhere.

Aaron drove the Blazer to ICC and left the #Taurus so I could get a new battery put in it. I was surprised that it actually started for me.

Aaron had also left the car with almost no gas in it. The gauge was BELOW the E and the light was on. I made it to Tremont and put some gas in it with the engine running. I hated to do that but was afraid it wouldn’t start if I turned the engine off.

The tire guy at Tremont Oil worked on the car with me. I say with because I had to hold the hood open as the hydraulic lifters are shot and the hood won’t stay open.

It took a while because he had trouble finding the right wrenches, etc. He kept saying he was the “tire guy and not a mechanic”. He done good though. The old battery had been in there since July of 2004 so I would say it was ready to be replaced.
