A herd of elk graze in the meadows of Yellowstone National Park with the background Mount Holmes, and Mount Dome, in Wyoming. Government agencies killed more than 6,000 wild bison leaving Yellowstone National Park over the last two decades - the grisly result of efforts to contain a serious livestock disease carried by the animals. Thousands of elk in the region also carry the disease, brucellosis, but are not managed similarly. Transmission occurs mainly through direct contact with birthing matter, but state and federal officials have included hundreds of male bison in their slaughter, contending that males still present a risk. There has been no documented case of brucellosis transmission in the wild between cattle and bison.
Another nonsense government policy against
the environment that protects nobody.

Bison trot in corrals at the Brogan containment facility in Corwin Springs, MT. in preparation for travel to Ted Turner’s Green Ranch along the Madison River west of Bozeman, MT. The bison, which have tested free of brucellosis, will be kept on the ranch for the next five years as part of a bison quarantine study. A coalition of wildlife advocates, on Tuesday March 23rd 2010, asked a Montana judge to overturn an agreement that allowed dozens of Yellowstone National Park bison to be transferred onto billionaire Ted Turner’s private ranch.

Wolf hunting and trapping that have killed more than 500 of the predators across the Northern Rockies. Hundreds of the animals have been killed - mostly through hunting - less than a year after being removed from the U.S. endangered species list. Restrictions on gray wolf harvests around Yellowstone are under consideration as the state prepares to kick off its inaugural wolf trapping season, on December 15th 2012. Conservation groups want limits on trapping after several wolves collared by park scientists for research were shot by Montana hunters in recent weeks.

I can personally attest to the accuracy of link below. Over the past 40 years I have been fortunate to visit many of our national parks and I could tell you stories of crazy behavior (and probably have right here on this Blog!)

One of my favorites happened when we were camping in Yellowstone. We had occasion to see a crowd of people getting too close to a large brown bear (grizzly). Tracey got some grainy shots but didn’t attempt to get any closer.

We had planned to leave that campground the next day but decided we would stay another day if I could pay for the campsite again. So the next morning I walked over to the ranger hut where they took the reservations and got in line.

There were a couple women who got in line behind me talking about the very same bear jam we had seen and one woman was bragging about the great picture she got of this bear. I noticed there was a ranger sitting at a table a few feet away who was doing some paper work. He was listening.

After a couple minutes of listening he approached the lady and asked her some questions about how close she was, was it a long telephoto lens etc. He then told her to come with him as she was not going to stay another day and he was going to have her escorted out of the park. The only time I ever saw justice served to the stupid people who endanger park animals.

Visitor misbehavior abounds as U.S. parks agency turns 100

The only white wolf in Yellowstone had to be euthanized after being shot. The park is treating her death as a crime.

Gardiner • A house falls into the swollen Yellowstone River during flooding in Montana.
This is at the northern entrance to Yellowstone National Park. All entrances will be closed for a very long time. We have been here many times. Such a shame.

Heavy flooding caused by “unprecedented rainfall” near Yellowstone National Park caused the park to close all entrances. “This isn’t my words, but I’ve heard this is a thousand-year event,” Yellowstone Superintendent Cam Sholly said. “From what I understand, one of the highest cubic feet per second (CFS) ratings for the Yellowstone River recorded in the ‘90s was at 31,000 CFS, and Sunday night we were at 51,000 CFS.”
