Jeff’s Missouri Bicycle Trip Report - Introduction

On November 4^th of this year I received an email from my friend Jeff about his extraordinary bicycle trip from Morton, IL to Springfield, MO. Maybe “extraordinary” seems a bit exaggerated but it sure seems that way to me. I don’t think I could bicycle from Tremont to Morton much less the 9 day trip Jeff chronicles. I include his 1^st email to me below as introduction to his trip report. I immediately replied to Jeff and asked if I could share his experience. He agreed as long as I removed some of the personal information. I have done so and Jeff has read through it before I published it to the blog so I didn’t tread too heavily upon his privacy. I’m sure some of you will recognize Jeff from his pictures and some of you won’t. If you have any questions or comments for Jeff let me know and I will pass them along to him via email to reply as he wishes. So we begin with ... the 1^st email from Jeff:

Sent: Wednesday, November 4^th, 2009 12:00 PM

Subject: bicycling trip report offer

I spent 9 days last spring, from Monday, May 18^th through Tuesday, May 26^th, riding my bicycle on a 549 mile trip from Morton to Springfield, MO. I’m finally prepared to mass email the trip report, in 2 parts each day, for 9 days, starting on Monday. The emails are big (most around 2MB), due to lots of pictures. So that I don’t overload anyone’s unattended inbox, or wear out your delete key, please let me know if you’d like to receive this report by way of email. (If you have dial-up, receiving these would be painful.) Also, if you plan to attend my presentation on November 19^th at the church’s Men’s Fellowship meeting, you may want to wait until then (though there’ll be more details in these emails).

Note: Attached with each email will be a file that will open in Google Earth, if you have that program installed on your computer. (Free download at http://earth.google.com , though you may want to deselect the accompanying Google Chrome offer). The file shows the map for the track (path I took) that pertains to that email (morning or afternoon track).
